Crafting is fun for all ages and interests. This blog evolved from researching resources for friends and articles I write as a freelance writer. It is a place to share the information I discovered. Please feel free to leave comments and questions. I am always looking at new projects ideas for family and friends in areas of my own abilities and theirs. American Girl Doll Loomed Shawl
I have been trying to find creative ways to use looms to add projects to my doll donation project. I decided to experiment with a shawl. I started with a few stitches on the blue knifty knitter loom and kept increasing to create the shawl. It took a few tries. The tie was crocheted. I know you can knit ties, but I crochet faster than I could possibly do an I-cord. It was a chance to see how my body is adjusting to crochet and I had no pain doing the chains.

American Girl Doll Loom Knit Hat and Scarf
I wanted to get this posted last week, but it did not happen. This is the hat and scarf set made with the blue knifty knitter. While I am looking forward to returning to my crochet hook, I am appreciating the things I can make with my looms for the doll. I have a doll shawl and scrap blanket to post that I have finished for my donation project. It was nice to be able to continue with my goal even without my crochet hooks.

American Girl Doll Loom Knit Hat
I'm pleased to say I finished my hat for my donation doll. The blue knifty knitter is perfect if you want to loom knit a hat for your 18" doll. You can follow the basic knifty knitter hat directions or try your own alternate style.
I started a matching scarf on the blue loom. It doesn't work quite as fast as crocheting, but since I have more time to go before I can resume crocheting, it is keeping me busy and I'm still producing items that will add to my donation project.
If my skills really improve I have a sweater pattern I bought ages ago that I would love to try. I have a long way to go before I get there, though.

American Girl Doll Loom Hat
Sadly, when you try to research doll patterns and looming you often end up with sites that have viruses or are not at all related to loom knitting. They know it is a high search term and so they attach it to their site and hope to drag people in.
I have been working on an 18" doll donation project with mostly crochet items. Do to some surgery I cannot crochet much at the moment, but I find the loom knitting does not require the pulling or create the same irritations on my body that the crocheting does. I started making simple dishcloths on the knitting board to get back into the swing of things, frustrated that I could not work on my doll project, but remembered that there were some things that I could loom for dolls that were simple. Next month I hope to be back to crocheting, but by then I hope to have developed enough looming skills to continue doing both.
The blue knifty knitter loom is usually the hat loom considered for babies. If you place it on the head of the 18" doll you are working with you can find out if it fits your doll. I have used it for both the American Girl and the Springfield Doll and not had an issue. If you follow the basic directions for making a hat, found in the knifty knitter directions or any of the basic books you can make a winter hat for the doll. This is the first one I am making using two strands. I want to make a matching scarf for the donation doll, too.
I also want to experiment with some of the other hat patterns and see how they will work on the blue loom, as I get more proficient with understanding the directions. I also have some interesting scarf/hat patterns that would be fun to try to see if they would work on this loom with some work.

Working with the Knitting Board
I had been promising myself for ages that I would start the process of learning to loom knit again. The process was started once before and then stopped when I had presents to finish. I bought books, DVD's and even more looms. However, there always seemed to be one more crochet project that called to me.
I was supposed to have surgery this week. I planned on having finished projects preposted to cover my time away. However, with a scheduling issue my surgery got moved up and thankfully instead of waiting for surgery tomorrow I had mine right before Memorial Day. I would much rather be recovering than anticipating surgery.
The first week I was too tired to do more than sleep. However, as the sleepiness wore off and I still need to be in rest mode boredom is the enemy. Pulling is rather painful on the side, so crocheting is not an option. Then I remembered my looms. This seemed like the time to explore.
I decided to use dishcloth cotton for my experiment. After all, even when they are not beautiful, dishcloths are practical. I suspected my first efforts with the knitting board might not be as successful as I wanted. However, I am liking the double knit look of this one. It probably is thick enough to be a potholder without having to sew it. My technique needs work. However, my sanity has been restored as I have something to keep my hands busy until I can get back to finishing the 18" doll wardrobe I was working on. I may even have mastered the technique before I feel comfortable enough to go back to my hooks.
