The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe

It was a very Nursery Rhyme Fairy Tale themed Christmas gifting season for one set of presents this year. As I've written many times I love toys that link to books. I sent along My First Mother Goose with Humpty and this gift. I thought they'd make the rhymes more fun.

This is an old out of print Michele Wilcox pattern found in an 1988 Annie's Attic pattern booklet called Toy Chest. Annie's has been recently releasing some of their out of print patterns so if I do discover this one I will post a link. After writing up the Humpty blog post I stumbled across the pattern looking for another out of print pattern on their e-pattern site and updated my post to include the link for anyone who might want to make that pattern. You never know when they will reissue an old pattern in digital format.

The challenge of this pattern wasn't the shoe it was completing all the little people. I alternated making little people with finishing other projects. It was the only way to finish everything that needed to get done. It almost became assembly line crochet. Finish a little person, crochet an arm of something else, start .... and return to little person. I did get a remarkable amount of stuff done.

Humpty Dumpty

Twas the weekend before Thanksgiving and all through the house the hooks were a flying the Shelties were grabbing at stuffing pusing it into their mouths.

Humpty was finished the Sunday before Thanksgiving.

I love making gifts for kids that tie to children's books. Mother Goose was a favorite of mine as a child. We knew so many of the poems. Humpty continues to be a favorite of mine and I've loved the new kids stories with Humpty as a detective. I think adding toys is a great way for kids to make a connection between favorite books and fun.

Years ago for another family member I made another Humpty found here. I do think he was cute and probably one of the best faces I've ever done. My issue is that he wasn't a traditional amigurumi he was a flat more pillow like structure. You made both sides as a panel and sewed them together. It was also quite a bit larger than most of the toys I make.

I went looking through my patterns for something different for this project and I found it in an old Annie's Crochet Newsletter July-August 1992. You can purchase the pattern at e-pattern central here. If it isn't on sale when you go there and you have time to wait I suggest doing so as they periodically have amazing sales.

Humpty Dumpty

I got behind on my blogging again as I worked to send off my Christmas boxes. However, the boxes have been mailed and I can now get caught up on posting my projects.

Humpty was one of my favorite Christmas projects. Like the Old Woman in the Shoe this pattern came from a vintage Annie's Attic publication Toy Chest, 87T61. This year's presents seem to have found a nursery rhyme and fairy tale theme.

Humpty is not completely an amigurumi. His body is made in more traditional flat panels associated with sewn stuffed animals. However, his arms and legs do follow the amigurumi style. I actually ended up breaking out my yarn bobbins in order to work on Humpty's shirt. Without them, the yarn got tangled. I think it is the first time I have required yarn bobbins for a toy project.

There are still a few more projects in this leaflet that I would like to make for spring birthdays or Easter baskets. However, those will have to wait until after the Christmas season.

The Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe

I am continuing on my literary present theme and finished the Old Woman Who Lived in the Shoe. I found the pattern in a vintage Annie's Attic publication Toy Chest, 87T61. I love the way the children look a little like the Old Fisher Price Little People and that the windows give them a way to make to move the figures in and out of the house.

This was a great stash busting projects. The peach was actually yarn I had picked up at a Senior Center sale for $.50/skein that I'm also using to make Humpty Dumpty from the same leaflet. I have both sides of Humpty's body done. I sewed together the Polar Bear. I just need to make his hat and he will be finished, too.

With Thanksgiving only a few days away, my Christmas mailing deadline is fast approaching. I'm still hopeful of reaching my goals.
