Pumpkin Pie

I've been working through this series of free mini pie patterns to add to the Thanksgiving box. These patterns work up quickly and make cute play food for kids to play with during the holiday season and long after. You can find the free pumpkin pie pattern here.

This pattern is made with a variety of brands of worsted weight yarn and a g hook.

Turkey Legs

I'm continuing work on my Thanksgiving crochet food. DH's favorite part of the Thanksgiving dinner is the turkey legs. It seemed fitting to add some to the Thanksgiving play food part of the package I'm sending out.

I've been having fun looking through AmiguruMe Eatsand this first turkey leg pattern comes from that book. As I've mentioned previously this book does discuss scents but you can easily make these projects as normal amigurumi food projects without the scents if you choose to do so as I have without any issue. For those interested in scents there are directions.

When possible even when making the same item I love to try different patterns. I've never thought items had to be identical. The second pattern is a free pattern you can find here.

While both legs were made with the same worsted weight yarn they are different sizes as the first was made with a D hook and the second with an E hook. The construction styles were different and I enjoyed playing with both designs.

There are larger patterns out there for turkey legs like this free one here that I looked at when thinking about food to include in the Thanksgiving box. However, space can be an issue when kids start acquiring play food. Sometimes small isn't a bad thing.

Thanksgiving Finger Puppets

The Thanksgiving box went out with Thanksgiving finger puppets and some fun Thanksgiving books. The finger puppets are quick to crochet and they make fun little toys to distract a little one on during the long cooking time on Thanksgiving day. For those of you interested in the free patterns you can find the female Pilgrim here, the male Pilgrim here, and the turkey here.

Crochet Pilgrim Bears

Back in November of 2010, I made a set of these Pilgrim Bears using an adapted out of print Annie's Attic pattern, 8B040. It was hard to send them off to their new homes, but I did, always believing I'd get back to making myself another pair. Well this year I got to thinking about how fast Thanksgiving disappears with the long Halloween season and the rush to Christmas. So, I decided I'd try to make something special that I would have to remember not just this holiday, but hopefully many more Thanksgivings to come.

Most of the adaptations I made to the pattern are in the face. The Annie's pattern has a cute almost cartoon face, but I like the simpler face I chose for my bears. After having made the ears for the first set that stick out, I opted against that for this pair. I just didn't like the look as much as I do the way they look in my revised set. I also stuck with one color for the face this time and that seemed to be a better choice too, looking back at the older pictures.

The pumpkins are from a Mary Maxim kit I made in 2012. I put them out when the Halloween stuff comes out and keep them out through Thanksgiving. I love the colors.

I'm working on a Pilgrim Boy at the moment. I just need to make his arms and sew them on. As time is running out, I'm not sure if I will attempt his sister this year. However, when the season started I had no hope of starting the bears so I feel pretty good about the additions I've made to our Thanksgiving decorations.

Pilgrim Turkey

Just a reminder if you have not entered the Fashion Doll Leaflet Giveaway for a Leisure Arts crochet leaflet you can enter here.

I finished the Pilgrim Turkey pattern I received in the Crochetville Kit Swap. I mentioned previously that this turkey was not created in the traditional amigurumi circle style. Instead, the pattern directions instruct one to create two pieces and sew the two pieces together. I think I will keep the details for future patterns, but work on a more traditional amigurumi body. I love the hat, the bib, and the other features. I will be including them on future turkeys. I may even try the flat body again.

The turkey was made using Red Heart Super Saver I received as part of the kit swap. They eyes are Darice 9mm Safety Eyes. The turkey is finished with 5/8" black and white ribbon. I might try a narrower ribbon next time to make it easier to tie.

Crochet Pilgrim Weeble

This was actually one of the first projects I started and then abandoned to work on some other things. She is likely to be one of the only Thanksgiving projects I end up having done for my own house, as she did not make the cut for the trip across country. I may finish her husband on Thanksgiving Day. I like having something to keep my hands busy and a holiday Amigurumi could be fun.

This project was actually not called a Weeble, but a Pilgrim Pal and can be found in The American School of Needlework's Crochet & Knit Favorites of Rita Weiss, 1023 Volume 2, 1983. It is actually a cute book with patterns for each month of the year. While I am interested in some of the other patterns, I did buy it for the Pilgrim Weebles.

The interesting thing about working with patterns is how you learn to adapt them. The bonnet for this girl is actually folded in half. I am going to experiment with the pattern because I think it would make a great American Girl Doll bonnet and be better than the first one I made for the Pilgrim outfit.
