Purple Bat

I pulled my Halloween patterns at the end of the summer. I am getting a late start on my Halloween package. The bat pattern is from Crochet Village's Halloween Goblins set that includes the bat, a ghost trick or treater, and a vampire. I would love to finish the set, but it may have to wait until next year as I'm working through another fall Crochet Village set Fall Visitors. I adapted one of the pumpkin patterns. Now I am working on the crow from the same pattern set. I made the turkey for last year's Thanksgiving box. I also used Suncrafter's yellow eyes. The pattern would work with standard safety eyes or sewn eyes, too.

This was a great scrap project as I was able to use up some left over afghan yarn for the bat. I love being able to work through my yarn stash for these projects.

Halloween Lovey Doll

Another item is ready for my Halloween box. This pattern for a Halloween Lovey Doll comes from the September/October 2011 Crochet Today. I believe there is a connection between Crochet Today and Red Heart as there is a great deal of Red Heart yarn promotion in their patterns and in return promotion of the magazine on the Red Heart website. I do not know the details, but with the cost of production, it would seem like a good marketing technique to sell more yarn. I however am on a kick to use yarn from my stash or yarn locally available on my toy projects. When doing larger projects like afghans where I need significant amounts of the same color or cannot find a color locally I have resorted to ordering the yarn. Therefore, since Red Heart Creme de la Creme is not available locally, I chose not to order it and stuck with Sugar & Cream instead. I adapted the colors to what I had available.

What I found interesting as I was writing this blog is that Creme de la Creme is not as easy to locate online as I would have thought either. Considering this pattern was posted in a recent issue one would have thought it would be easy to located on the Red Heart website, it was not. I did find it more easily at the Knitting Warehouse and was able to compare weight, length, and price with the Lily brand and it seems similar although not having used it I cannot speak to quality. I am just not sure if Red Heart is discontinuing it, as it does not seem to be easy to locate on their site.

That being said this project obviously works up well with any worsted weight cotton. I am going to adapt the colors, the toy heads, and try making one for Thanksgiving, too. One adaptation I did make was leaving off the feet. Eventually I want to try my hand at making the topsy turvy dolls and I have some patterns. When making those the legs make sense. Here the legs looked awkward and strange. While I did make a candy corn man for this Halloween package, in that case he actually had a body that supported legs. In this instance, the body does not seem to call for it, so I chose not to include them.

Mummy Amigurumi

As I mentioned in my birthday post, I had been looking for a Mummy pattern when I found Halloween Ghoulies at Crochet Village. I put the pattern on my birthday list and was very happy when it was one of the ones my husband selected.

This was the first of my birthday patterns I crocheted. I used Caron One Pound yarn. One change I would make next time is to use sports yarn and adjust the required stitches to make the bandages. The worsted weight yarn made the bandages just a little to thick to work with when wrapping the mummy body.

I did change the pattern by adding saftey eyes instead of crocheting the eyes. My wrapping pattern was different than the one in the pattern picture. Another pattern alteration I made is that my Mummy stands. The one in the picture is sitting. I am looking forward to making more mummies in the future.

Happy Halloween

I got my Halloween decorations up last night including the crochet ones I made for the house. I already have a list of new Halloween projects for next year as I continue to dive into my Thanksgiving and Christmas pile.

I found Kelly, Stacie, and Skipper dolls online at KMart yesterday without all the accessories so Mom and I can have model dolls to make clothes with for our various projects. I bought a set with Kelly and Stacie in it having no idea how hard it would be to find a single Kelly doll to use as a model. I have not been hitting the yard sale circuit as much lately or I might have found one. I wanted to try making some clothes to send with the Barbie set I got for Christmas. Waiting was not an option. Skipper does not seem to be released often so I figured getting her alone now was essential. If she is released later in a set, at least Mom and I have a model to work from and I have something put aside for Easter or a birthday.

I have one Barbie Pilgrim dress that needs arms, an apron, snaps, and a cap and the battle will be done. I think I will try sock yarn for the next one. Even the right sports yarn appears to be too thick, although it still is cute.

The first Pilgrim Boy Bear is completed now that I put his buckles on. I hope to have pictures of him and the Pilgrim Girl posted next week. It all depends how crazy things get this weekend. The girl pattern is much more detailed in the outfit, but I have the head and arms to complete and she too will be done.

I hope everyone has a safe and happy Halloween.
