Santa Hot Pad

Twas the night before Christmas in 2020 and I was not hosting my annual Christmas party so I decided it would be a good idea to finish the hot pad I started. I had only finished the striped area and there was much to do to complete the project, but I had time on my hands with the COVID restrictions so I went to it.

The pattern for the hot pads is based on a mug rug pattern found in Spooktacular Crochet.I make a second mug rug in a primary color and crocheted the two together to get the thickness one wants for a hot pad. I've been making these since I bought the book prior to Halloween in 2020 to brighten my holiday kitchen items. I originally thought I'd have a complete Santa applique for the hot pad but the figure was far larger than I'd anticipated. By using the Omega Sinfonia and a c hook I was able to make Santa's head fit but the body was too large. You can find the free applique pattern here.

Valentine Hot Pad

Since the fall I've been turning mug rug patterns into hot pads by adding a back to them to make them sturdy enough to handle hot pans. I was contemplating what to do about Valentine's Day when i discovered Annie's had released Farmhouse Mug Matswith a heart pattern and my Valentine's project was selected.

I changed both the cotton yarn and the background color. I've been ordering Omega Sinfonia yarn from Creative Yarn Source for my hot pads and I have a variety of colors left in my stash. The cotton works well for the hot pads and at this point who wants to buy more yarn when you can use what you have in your house to make your project. The original bakground was off white and even if I'd ordered the yarn listed I wouldn't have ordered the color. I'm not a fan of white in my kitchen. I rather like the pink. The two other colors are fairly close to the color suggestions in the leaflet.

Turkey Hot Pad

I mentioned when I was finishing the Halloween hot pads I adapted from the mug rug pattern in Spooktacular Crochetthat I wanted to make some additional holiday hot pads by alternating the colors and finding different appliques. This is my first Thanksgiving one.

The original pattern called for Omega Sinfonia sport yarn and I continued with that for this project. I've been able to find limited colors of this yarn online at Hobby Lobby. I couldn't find any in our local store when I was there recently. My primary source for this yarn continues to be Creative Yarn Source. Again I have no association with the store, I just like to know where I can find yarn that is suitable for a project and lately cotton sport weight yarn has been something I've been searching for and buying more of online and I'm always open to knowing where to go for selection and price.

The colors used for the hot pad are cinammon, burgendy and gold. The turkey is primarly cinammon but the feathers are made from scarps of left over cotton from previous hot pad and ami projects that used both Sinfonia and Schachenmayr Catania sport cotton yarn.

For those of you new to hot pads and wondering why I use cotton over acrylic, acrylic melts. There are other natural yarns that may work but cotton is my go to for kitchen items.

I was looking for a free applique to use for this hot pad and found this one based on the hand turkeys kids used to make in school. You can find the pattern here. The pattern calls for size 10 crochet thread but I wanted a turkey that would fit the hot pad so I used the sport cotton and I was pleased with the outcome.

Scrubby Posey

A friend has asked for kitchen items for her donation project and so I've been having fun experimenting with projects I don't normally try for myself. I was looking for projects I could make while watching the Olympics so it had to be something that I could do that didn't require maximum focus and I came across patterns made with plastic scrubbies. While I was out picking up kitchen cotton for another project, I also made sure I picked up a package of scrubbies to see if I could even work with them successfully.

This is a free pattern available from Lily here. If you've never crocheted with the plastic scrubbies before, the Lily site has a video tutorial on the same page as the pattern that I found rather helpful in explaining how to get your hook through the mesh and how to get the first row established evenly. I had concerns about ripping the mesh, but the video gave some good tips not just for the foundation row, but works through the whole pattern with you.

This is a great scrap project to finish off cotton left over from other projects. These work up quickly and are great for little gifts or for craft fundraisers.

Scrubbie

Around my birthday, I received a wonderful package from a Crochetville fairy godmother that included a scrubbie. DH really liked the pot scrubber and urged me to discover a pattern to make more. I found a free pattern on Ravelry here.

The pattern works up quickly. The author includes a link to a video that shows how to make the scrubbie from crocheting to sewing it together. Never having made one of these before, I found the video important to understand how the scrubbie is put together. I took pictures so I'd remember the how to put it together the next time.

Just one note, in order to get the spiral look for my scrubbie, I did have to mold it a bit when I was done, but it has held its shape. At first, I thought I'd made a mistake, but I realized in looking at the one I'd received that it also had to be moved into the spiral. It didn't naturally fall that way.

I plan to make more of these and may throw some into Christmas packages this holiday season. I was impressed with how well they cleaned.

It has been a busy summer. I have several shawls to post. I fell behind with Blogging as I prepared to travel to a family wedding. The wedding was wonderful, but distracted me from many of my normal summer activities. I just need to get the crochet pictures uploaded so I can post them.

I finally started working on learning Tunisian crochet. I've been working through a dishcloth with assistance from a DVD and books. I have been researching my options to take a local class. I have videos, but I have decided I need a teacher I can interact with to make more progress. I also located my local chapter of the CGOA, and am hoping to get involved starting with their meeting next month.
