Ken Swim Trunks

I was up bright and early Saturday morning for my water aerobics class after finishing Ken's swim trunks Friday night.

I contimplated trying the swim trunks from the Margaret Funk booklet but after realizing the size 10 thread was too large I was not going down to size 20 thread for swim trunks and thus returned to Leisure Arts out of print Honeymoon Wardrobe leaflet 2132 that I'd started using last year.

Notes:

This was made with Baby Bernat Big Ball Sport yarn blue and white and a 2.5 tulip hook.

Contrasting color changes in row 2 and lasts for 2 rows. I missed this some how.

These shorts join later than I expected despite making them before. They close in the back with a snap.

Ken Ski Outfit

This is from another House of White Birches newsprint leaflet Crochet Wardrobe for 11 1/2 inch Fashion Dolls from Margaret Funk. I've made this set previously but it didn't make it into the 2025 donation.

Notes:

This was made with Knit Picks Palette Fingering Yarn Rainforest Heather and Custard.

I took advantage of their summer sale to stock up on Palette for my doll projects as my color selection was running low. Until my next order arrives I'm lacking in pant colors.

I've been experimenting with the different sized hooks available to me through my Tulip purchases to see if I can get better fits for some of the doll projects.

I'd previously used a C hook for the pants. This time I used a 3.0mm hook with a wider elastic band as the previous elastic was prone to not staying together. I'd stick with this hook size for future projects.

The sweater used the same 3.0mm hook as the pants. I make two major changes to the sweater. I do one large stripe rather than two small as I found the stripe was lost doing a single row. I also do not decrease the arms at the bottom as I found Ken's hands weren't going through the sleeve. I do ss the sleeves and the pant bottoms to decrease the catching that happens as the outfit is taken on and off.

I had made a note previously about using an e hook for the hat. This Ken has suprisingly wide molded hair and the bigger hook makes the hat fit over his hard head.

Ken Merman

I know Mermaid themed dolls can be popular but one reason I avoid buying them to donate is they are some what limiting.

If you tire of the water theme most of them don't have removable tails so the Mermaid doll isn't likely to be easily moved into another play environment.

This isn't an issue for those who buy multiple dolls but for kids where this may not be an option, I try to go for dolls that can be adapted to different pretend options.

I found a pattern for Barbie a few years back and adapted it to Skipper last year. After seeing a Ken Merman doll I decided to try the tail on Ken to see if the pattern would work for him as well and it was a decent fit.

Notes:

This is made with Caron Simply Soft Oceana Paints. I don't use lots of Caron Simply Soft with dolls as it tends to split and catch on doll fingers, etc. but this has worked out for the mermaid projects. The original pattern has a solid main color with a multi-color trim but I like this for the whole outfit.

I used an e hook for Ken as I did previously for Barbie and Skipper.

Ken being taller required a longer tail than the notes I wrote for Skipper so I crocheted to row 29 before skipping to the finishing row of 33.

I missed a note I made regarding Barbie's fin so I added it to the pattern now and I'm noting it here to make sure Skipper's fin's are not reduced below 10 stitches as I wrote on Barbie's post they came out better that way.

I'm currently experimenting with thread to see if this will work for Stacie. I will get back to making one for Skipper as I have the notes from last year on making the adjustments for this pattern using the Caron Simply soft that will fit her.

Ken Farmer

This is one of Shirley Jean Wright's free fashion doll patterns that can be found with the help of the Wayback machine here. Sadly the machine doesn't always save pictures just text.

I made this pattern for the donation a few years back and clearly it was a different Ken because I had to play with the pattern to get it to fit the It Takes Two Camping Ken I'm currently donating.

Notes:

This note was added to my pattern copy but I'm placing it here because I often read these notes before even grabbing the pattern to start. The shirt is a tougher fit for this doll. I'd suggest starting with the shirt, getting it to fit and then deciding if the waist for the overalls should be wider. I didn't do that for this project but I would do it next time as I plan on continuing with this doll for the donation for a while.

Overalls:

I used a D hook with Red Heart Super Saver Light Periwinkle for this project. I ordered a three pack from Amazon after completing the project because I can't get the color locally and they are a great pants color for the boy and girl dolls along with other projects. Lately I've picked up great shades only to have them never appear locally again.

I had previously done 17 rows for the legs, I increased to 18 this year and would consider 19 for a future project.

As I mentioned this Ken is a different build then the previous doll so he needed a longer bib so I had to add a row to the bib.

Shirt:

The shirt has never really been an issue for this project until this year. The shirt is made as one piece not buttons or snaps required. However this requires that it can be slid on and off the doll.

My first attempt using previous directions was too small. I then thought about not joining it but that looked terrible.

After various attempts I decided to change to using an e hook until row 5 when the armholes are created switching back to the D hook I originally used for this project.

Note to self that the projects stops joining at row 5 as this is when both the armholes and the collar begin to form. Without this the shirt will not pull on and off.

The sleeves were huge as written so I did a decrease round of sc which also finished off the arms to make for a better fit. I then did 3 rounds of DC finishing with a ss around the edges to keep them from fraying. Hat:

I have yet to get her hat directions to work as written and each time I've made the hat it has been different. This year's hat was made with Hobby Lobby sport yarn.

Ken Sleeping Bag

I'd taken a break from Aztec Wishes doll clothes to make the deadline for Kits for Kids. When I came back I wanted to work on some larger doll clothes to give my hands a rest.

I haven't given up on that goal but I also realized I can't abandon the accessories or I'll be scrambling in the fall to finish off items that got forgotten. Looking back at last year's projects this sleeping bag was posted early November. Not something I wish to repeat.

The only sleeping bags remaining are the Barbie ones. With this I still need Skipper, Stacie and 2 Chelsea as I will need one for the Shoebox donation, too.

This is a free fashion doll sleeping bag pattern found here. I like the texture from the beanie bag pattern also on the same site found here so I combine the patterns.

Notes:

The yarn for this bag is Red Heart Super Saver Stripes Latte Stripes.

I use an I hook for the sleeping bag and once the pillow is made I stop counting rows. I continue to crochet until I can close the bag over the doll's feet with a little room at the bottom.

Ken Valentine Tank Top and Pants

I stumbled across a free Barbie heart Valentine's sweater pattern but my first attempt was clearly going to be too large for Barbie so I turned it into a tank top for Ken and then made him a pair of pants to make it a set. You can find the pattern here.

I haven't given up on this for Barbie I just need to find the right fiber. It suggested fingering weight yarn so I tried size 3 thread and a D hook which was suggested. This clearly was too big. I'd make this in the future for Ken as a fun Ken and Barbie set but I am considering if I want to join as with Barbie's bent arms it makes getting clothes on and off more challenging.

I did not use the white finishes for Ken as I went with a tank top rather than the Barbie sweater.

The pants are my standard go to of measuring and sewing a piece of elastic together waist size for the doll. I then single crochet around the elastic for the first row. The rest of the rows are in dc. When I reach the crotch I split with a chain 4 reducing I believe to 15 dc per leg.

Ken Pajamas

I can get a few years out of one Ken doll model but it is often hard to stock up until I'm sure I really like a model.

The dentist for instance was not my favorite Ken he was a bit smaller which meant every pattern had to be modified to fit him drastically. Last year was my final year with a hiking Ken model. Sadly when I realized he was a great fit for my patterns he was no longer available so he had a limited shelf life.

This brings us to It Takes Two Camping Ken which I was smart enough to stock up on this version so I have an additional 5 years to go. This is good because once again I have a model that seems to fit the patterns I have.

Unfortunatly, they've already discontinued the Stacie and Skipper dolls from this set which is sad because they both again fit the patterns I have so well. I'm finding it hard to find replacements for these two. I have time as I have two more years for Skipper and three for Stacie so perhaps something will be released before then.

This is actually a jumpsuit pattern found in Crochet Wardrobe for 11 1/2 inch Fashion Dolls including a Complete Wedding Esemble and Trousseau. When I originally saw the pattern I thought it was PJ's so I decided to adapt the pattern using the top for my pajamas top and making pants.

Notes:

I used a D hook and Baby Bernat Sport Blue yarn for the top and followed most of the pattern as written through row 10 where I stopped before joining to make the jumpsuit. The one major difference I made was to use sc for the collar as it was way to large with the suggested dc. The sleeves worked as written.

I made the pants the way I make most of Ken's pants. I measured and sewed a piece of elastic big enough for his waist and crocheted around it with a C hook and the same yarn as the top. When I reached the crotch I split the paints by chaining 4 in the middle and joining thus creating two legs of equal stitches. After reading last year's notes I made each leg 19 rows from waist to bottom of the leg.

These are the smallest white butttons that come in my button sets I buy. Just an FYI note to myself for future projects. I actually did come back and check this note and picture from last year so I'm adding it back because it helped me decide which buttons to use.

Ken Christmas Caroler

I was able to track down links for the out of print free Ken Caroler pattern. Page 1, 2

While I'd made Barbie previously I'd never made Ken. The original pattern gives Ken a Christmas green coat and hat. It is a festive outfit but having already made a Santa outfit for Ken I was hoping for a more winter look that he could use to carol with Barbie but also might work for other winter play fun. Therefore I chose blue and black as my primary colors with some red highlights.

As I was cleaning my yarn stash I found a crate of Red Heart sport yarn and I am going to be putting it to use for projects like this one this year. I'm also hoping to replace the colors I finish off with Hobby Lobby's sport as it has a similiar weight.

Notes:

I used the suggested e hook for this project.

All the yarn except the hat was Red Heart Sport. I learned from making holiday yoga skeleton hats using Ken's holiday patterns that I need worsted 4 yarn so the hat is made with Red Heart Super Saver Black and an e hook.

The first thing that surprised me as I started this project is the coat is not a traditional coat but more of a tunic that attaches a cape to it.

As with Barbie in order to give the arms room to fit into the holes I did not join the first three rows and then used a snap to close the opening.

I followed the directions as written except I crabbed stitched around the hat edges and surfaced stitched the red trim around the hat.

I also followed the same directions for the book that I used with Barbie sewing the book together.

Having found the original pattern link I went back to look to see if I'd lost the directions for Ken's pants but I couldn't find any. I'm still playing with my directions because I don't love the crotch but this is what I did for this pair of pants.

Cut an elastic to fit Ken's waist.

Sc around elastic 24 stitches

Dc around for 3 rows

Split for legs dc in 12 stitches chain 3 and join

10 rows of 15 stitches

sc around

ss around

I'm thinking about trying the next pair of pants I make without the chain 3 to see if they sit better.

Finally I couldn't resist a picture of the two of them together caroling. I never know how the toys are distributed but I do like to think of the Barbie's heading out together.

Ken Santa

When I find a Barbie family member I try to find enough of that model to last me a few years as I find each model seems to be slightly different in size which means I need to fit the patterns I have to the new model.

Last year I finished the last of my previous model, the Ken Travel Doll and this year am moving on to both the Ken It Takes Two Camping and the Barbie It Takes Two Camping . I have enough to last a few years before hunting for my next models.

I was curious to know how this Ken compared to my previous model and thankfully he's slightly larger. The Doctor model I had used prior to the Travel model was significantly smaller boned and the clothing was all too large. It was not fun adapting all his clothes.

This Ken project is part of my goal to add more holiday themed outfits to the donation this year. I may try to go back and add the Pilgrim outfits for Ken and Barbie after I finish as many Christmas outfits as I can find for the various sized dolls.

This outfit is a combination of an free Ken pattern only available through the Wayback machine and an Annie's Fashion Doll Crochet Club's Old World Santa and Mrs. Claus FC43-01. You can find the first page of the free pattern here. Page 2 is available here.

I've been using the hats from the free patterns to decorate some yoga skeletons for various holidays but I haven't made any of these outfits since I first started making Barbie clothes. I didn't read my notes about using the Pilgrim boots. I used the boots from the Annie pattern. I may try the Pilgrim boots when I make the Pilgrim outfit to see which ones fit best.

Notes:

I used old Red Heart Sport Yarn in Red instead of the suggested 4 ply yarn as I remember these outfits being large when I made them before for Santa's main outfit.

The white was Bernat Big Ball Baby yarn and the Black was Knit Picks Brava Sport Yarn. The gold was misc cotton yarn I had on hand.

I used an e hook except for the trim which was large with an e so I reduced to a D hook.

Pants:

I followed the directions for crocheting over elastic to create the waist.

The original pattern attaches the boots to the pants. I remember this not only not being fun to make but it also made it hard to get the pants hard to get on and off. This was my reason for looking for an alternate boot pattern. This means the pants have a total of 17 rows not 7. Other than changing count I found the pants pattern worked as written.

Jacket:

There is a snap at the top of the coat to help keep it closed. I didn't follow the directions for closing the belt. I made the belt as suggested and closed it like I do with the Our Generation Pilgrim Boy with a snap in the back and a sewed buckle on the front.

Hat and Beard:

I had to extend and expand the hat rows to get the width and length I wanted for Santa's hat. I think I went one row too far as it is slightly larger than I had wanted.

I played a little with the beard to get it to stretch across and then tacked the hat on to keep it folded up.

Boots:

I followed the basic pattern for the boots found in the Old World Santa pattern and then used the topper found in the free pattern. Use a D hook for top of boots.
