Candy Corn Villager

I was a huge fan of Fisher Price's Little People as a child and I've bought many of their holiday sets for gifts over the years. This year with Covid I've been writing about starting to create a Halloween village as part of an annual Halloween box I've been sending out. However, what is a village without its villagers?

One of the patterns I've chosen to help with this is one purchased from Pamspatterns, Crochet Little Halloween set found here. The pattern set comes with a house but again more likely would make next year's box than this years. However, I am hopeful about adding some of the characters.

You may recognize some of this yarn. While the pattern calls for worsted weight yarn I wanted to use up some of the left over sport yarn from the hot pads as it is in Halloween colors. I had some acrylic yarn in peach color that worked for the face. I think the sport weight is a good choice for these smaller figures. I'm going to look into making sure I have some on hand for future projects.

I've seen lots of ghosts, Frankenstein's, and Dracula's, but I rather liked this character because I hadn't seen a candy corn little person before. Just a note, the designer does sell holiday and other collections of her little people as well as holiday set. The candy corn character is not included in the holiday pack. I have both the holiday set and the Halloween set and realized I didn't have all the Halloween characters when I was comparing the patterns and deciding if I wanted to buy the Halloween set.

Crochet Little People

As I mentioned in the post about the Fourth of July Car, I have been working to find a pattern that would make crochet toys close to the Fisher Price Little People or the Weebles. My first attempt was a start, but not where I wanted to finish.

While I was working on Christmas ornaments, I think I found the solution. It is amazing the things you discover when trying to do something else. I was working on ornaments from Leisure Arts Christmas Ornaments to Crochet #512. The leaflet has a "basic ornament" pattern that it refers to for several people and animal ornament patterns. I was working on one of the doll patterns when I realized it was not coming out as the pattern suggested, however it did look like the Little People I had been trying to make. Therefore, I abandoned ornament making and made a couple of these as prototypes. I will have to make more before Christmas, but I have a start now.

These are easy to adapt and I am looking forward to making a variety of them to go with my other toys. I see a farmer couple emerging.

Crochet Parade Car

I love the Fourth of July Parade that takes place in my hometown. I still drag my husband and anyone else who is around to sit and watch the parade with me every year. We stake out a great place early on and enjoy the day while we wait for the parade to start.

While I was making toys to send for the holiday, I came across a pattern in an Annie's Crochet Newsletter for a Fun Mobile for a car and what looked like Weebles. It made me think of the old cars that were entered in the parade and I decided to make that the third item in the package. For those who are interested the pattern was found in the Nov-Dec 1988 Annie's Crochet Newsletter.

I would check the gauge on the main part of the car as the hood came out longer than it should have been and that made it challenging to sew together. I would also stick with sports yarn for the dolls. If the dolls did not need to fit in the car the size would have been less of an issue. Even on the second doll, I still did not have sports yarn for the face.

Despite the challenges, what kept me going was seeing the taillights on the car. That convinced me that despite the challenges, the project was going to be adorable when complete. I had never done anything with that kind of detail.

I am enjoying branching out into other types of toys. Hopefully, next week I will have the blogs ready on the Crochet World Train pattern I am working on. I have one more car to complete the set and then will need to get the pictures taken and loaded in order to have the posts ready.

If you arrived here looking for free car patterns there are some on the Free Toy Pattern Page. If you are looking for amigurumi dolls to crochet check out the Free Knit and Crochet Doll Pattern Page.

This pattern was challenging. I was trying to use up yarn and not buy more yarn. The dolls called for sports yarn and I have been trying to save my sports yarn for dolls clothes. So I tried to work the first doll to make it fit the car. The second doll benefited from changing the colors and using up some left over sports yarn.
