Snowman Ornament

I always try to get the Christmas ornaments out with the Thanksgiving boxes. For those of you who hate to see the holidays rushed I agree with you. However, this allows for the ornaments to make it on this year's tree without the pressure of me trying to get the Christmas box out really early so the Christmas ornaments make it to the tree. I don't expect them to see the light until tree day, as I'm sure Mom will put them away, but this way she has them when the day comes rather than having them show up after the tree is done.

I had purchased Amigurumi Christmas Ornaments because I wanted more simple options for amigurumi style ornaments. This always ends up being a busy time of year so having quick to make ornaments that are still cute is a plus.

I started with the snowman as a break from a thread turkey I'm making. It was nice to return to a g hook and worsted weight yarn. This was a really quick project and I was able to use up yarn on hand to finish the ornament. I did not use the metal hooks for the top of the ornaments as these are going to children, I crocheted a hook that a metal ornament hook can be added to as I thought this was a safer option. The metal could be glued in but there is always the option that it can release from the yarn and stab a small one.

I used saftey eyes which differs from the pattern and since I'm currently crocheting with size 10 thread for a turkey thread I used the orange thread for the nose rather than yarn. It made for a more detailed nose.

One ornament down, two to go. I'm going to continue alternating between the smaller Thanksgiving projects and the larger ornaments to keep my hands healthy and happy.

Gingerbread Man Ornament

I kept seeing this ornament on e-pattern central here and something about it struck me as familiar and thus kept me from buying it even though I wanted to make it as one of my Christmas ornament patterns to go out with the Christmas box this year.

When I got the October 2020 Crochet World magazine there were several patterns I wanted to make and decided to see if I could print the pages for the patterns I wanted from the magazine from the website rather than flip back and forth through the magazine as the patterns are placed through the magazine. Not only was I able to get the pages I wanted from the current magazine but I realized I had digital access to my account going back to 2009 when I originally subscribed.

I began to look through the magazines and was able to locate several patterns I'd been considering purchasing through e-patterns as well as ones I had purchased previously. From now on I know to check my digital magazine account first. I love that e-patterns offers out of print patterns. I've been able to find many out of print patterns I'd only previously found at second hand sites at considerably higher prices. This is just a reminder to myself to check my Crochet World digital account before buying again.

For those of you interested this appears in the December 2018 edition of Crochet World. I've listed the link for e-pattern central if you want to purchase the pattern from them.

I generally prefer yarn to thread but I really wanted to make this project for the Christmas box. If I make it again I think I would use the sport weight cotton I've been creating ami's with lately. The project would still be ornament sized and I'd be more comfortable working with the slightly larger yarn.

The pattern called for Lizbeth size 10 crochet thread and I couldn't find any when I searched when I started the project. Oddly I had trouble finding the brown in Aunt Lydia's in a shade close to what I wanted. I eventually tried Hobby Lobby's artiste size 10 cotton thread in hemp and it worked out well. I had the red, green, pink, and off white Aunt Lydia's size 10 on hand from previous projects.

The two other items I didn't have on hand and had to find were beads for the eyes, which I also ended up ordering from Hobby Lobby and felt which is used as stuffing between the two pieces of gingerbread.

Reindeer Christmas Ornament

I had a second Christmas package to send out and it too needed a Christmas ornament. Do to the time crunch I was looking for something that would work up quickly.

I'm a bit of a pattern collector and this was one of those patterns Michaels used to have hanging up in the yarn aisles. It is dated in 2012. I looked on their website but these patterns don't seem to be available online any longer. It was a Loops & Threads pattern if that helps you find it.

This was another great stash busting project. This is all left over yarn from previous projects.

Santa Christmas Ornament

My family always had a tradition of unbreakable Christmas ornaments for the little ones to be able to decorate and enjoy the Christmas tree. I've kept the tradition up by trying to make and pass them on to others. I found this free Santa ornament pattern here for those who are interested.

Gingerbread Girl Ornament

I've made this ornament a couple of times for swaps or just a quick item to add to a package. She is adorable and the pattern was free. Sadly it has disappeared from the Internet so I can't share the pattern with you. Should she reappear as a fee or paid pattern I will try to update the post so you can find her too.

I've always been a fan of kid friendly ornaments that they can decorate with or play with as the season progresses. I have a bunch from my childhood that my Mom gave me when she moved. It keeps small hands away from the ones you don't want them playing with or breaking.

This ornament went along with the Santa Bear Lovey as part of my Christmas package. I'm already pondering my Valentine's Day lovey options. So far I think I'm going to need to find a Valentine's ami and turn it into a lovey. I suppose I could try to adapt a lovey into a Valentine's creature. I will get through Christmas before I work on that theme. I actually have found a patterns for St. Patrick's Day and Easter Loveys. That just leaves me with the July 4th holiday to consider once I've solved my Valentine's issue. Then she will indeed have a full set of holiday lovey blankies.

Shivers D Snowman Ornament

I posted the ornament I sent for Crochetville's Ornament Swap, yesterday. Today I'm posting the beautiful ornament I received. I love snowmen. In fact, I've been known to keep out the non-Christmas snowmen through the winter just to keep the house festive through the dark snowy days. I was delighted when my very thoughtful partner sent me pictures of three ornaments to choose from that she had created. However, then it became very hard to choose.

DH helped me settle the matter, by putting in the deciding vote based on my love for the snowguys.

I want to send out a very public Thank You to my partner who made this swap so much fun. This was truly a delightful bit of fun in a crazy season.

For those of you interested in Shivers, he is an e-pattern available for purchase through Mary Maxim here.

Turtle Ornament

I participated in Crochetville's Ornament swap this year. I decided on a turtle theme for my partner, but to my surprise, I couldn't find a turtle Christmas ornament pattern. I've been down this road making holiday themed ami's using Barbie clothing, so I set out to see if I could find a small turtle that would be suitable for an ornament.

The pattern for the turtle is the free Tiny Striped Turtle found here. I tried a couple of striping options before settling on Hobby Lobby's Christmas variegated. I liked the way it patched. I made the hat using an out of print Barbie pattern.

I've found over the years, doll patterns can adapt to ami's and in this case ornaments to create some fun holiday outfits. Once you get an idea of how to certain accessories like hats, they become easier to adapt to different sized heads.

Ballerina Ornament

I try to include crochet ornaments in my Christmas package. This pattern comes from Gourmet Crochet's Happy Holiday Amigurumi that I purchased a while back and only cracked open this year. While not specifically designed as an ornament, these amigurumi's are a good size for ornaments and this ballerina seemed like a good choice for next year's ornament selection.

I love Gourmet Crochet's Ami's. I continue to return to her Dinosaur pattern for quick ami presents. I have also used my Monster Mash Amigurumi several Halloween presents. I have the Amigurumi Nativity, but so far have only used the animals as part of a few farm sets I have made. Perhaps someday I will finish that set, too. I am hoping she will get back to designing ami's as it has been a long time since I have seen a new ami pattern set to purchase. However, it was fun to get some use out of the Christmas patterns I purchased and then never seemed to find the time to make.

This pattern works up quickly and while designed as an amigurumi toy, it is easily converted to an ornament.

Light Bulb Ornament

I love ornaments. They are quick and fun to make. As a gift item, they advantage of coming out each year and helping to bring back memories. Since they are stored most of the year, it eliminates the issue of where to display the gift, too.

I happen to love the old-fashioned big bulbed lights that you do not see much anymore. Several crochet patterns out there bring back that look. This is a free ornament pattern found here. It is a great project to use up scrap yarn and to make some fun Christmas decorations.

Snowman Ornament

Since I started crocheting I have been trying to include crocheted ornaments in my kid packages. For the younger ones they have the advantage of being unbreakable. However, I also like the idea of sending something handmade to decorate the tree. If they last, each child will have some starter ornaments for a new tree of his/her own.

This snowman was made using a free pattern from Lily Sugar and Cream found here. I used worsted scraps left over from Humpty and the Penguin to make mine. I did not dig into my cotton collection and I think he came out quite well.

House Ornament

This is the second ornament I completed from Amy Gaines' Woodland Christmas Ornament Pattern set. I have always loved Christmas scenes, villages, gingerbread houses, and items that create that Christmas picture. This was one of the patterns that attracted me to the set. I loved the snow on the roof and the little details that she added.

As part of my stash busting goal for 2012 I did use Red Heart Super Saver and Caron One Pounder for this project instead of the suggested Lion Brand's Vanna's Choice. The only place I really think it made a difference might have been the wreath. The fuzzier Vanna's may have made a better wreath than the Red Heart I substituted.

I am proceeding with my cat afghan and am hoping to have it finished soon. While I want to continue making Christmas ornaments to reach my goal for 2012, I am going to have to turn to Valentine's Day and St. Patrick’s Day projects, soon.

Rocking Horse Ornament

I have been a huge fan of rocking horses and carousel horses for years. When I saw the pattern for a crocheted rocking horse Christmas ornament, it seemed like a great way to share my interest with the next generation. This is another pattern I found in the out of print Annie’s Attic Crochet Kid’s Christmas Tree.

I loved the little details on this pattern, down to the saddle and the bridle around the horse’s mouth. What I had trouble working through were the rockers. I had trouble getting the rockers to sit flat. I tried a few times with two different sized hooks. I will likely attempt another shot at this pattern, as I would love to have one for my own tree. At that point, I can hopefully work out my rocker issues. I may try a different type of yarn and see if that creates a better outcome. Perhaps a softer or lighter weight yarn might work better.

Alphabet Christmas Block Ornament

Alphabet Christmas blocks are not an original or new idea for a Christmas ornament, but I always like to document where I got my patterns. When I read a blog, even if the pattern is not free, if someone tells me the name of the book or magazine the pattern came from, I have a chance of finding it, even if it is out of print through the resale market. Therefore, I provide others with the same resource. This pattern came from Annie's Attic Crochet Kid's Christmas Tree. I picked this up recently in one of my vintage pattern buying binges and I love the variety of kid friendly ornament patterns to make. While I have seen several alphabet block patterns, what I liked about this one was it taught the skill of making the letters in a simple method that clicked for me. Many merely state chain the letters or embroider the letters on to the block. This one actually explained a method for creating the letters that provided me with some level of success. I still have work to perfect the method, but I have avoided putting anything on my blocks, because I had no idea how to begin.
