Hamburger Amigurumi

This was the pattern that convinced me to purchase Simply Amigurumi: 10 Crochet Projects. I received a request for more play food for a pretend kitchen for Christmas. While I have some food patterns, this cheeseburger pattern was the best I have seen so far.

The pattern calls for Bernat Satin, Caron Simply Soft, and Red Heart's Soft. I am in a destashing mode and I used Caron One Pound, Red Heart Super Saver, and Vanna's Choice that I had on hand.

What I found original about this pattern is the way the items were put together. The cheese was not made as a traditional square, which is what I had anticipated. The burger was created in one piece but had an upper and lower piece to give the burger depth without stuffing it. The lettuce was a fun pattern to work on and the tomatoes were different from what I previously seen.

I still have not found a burger bun pattern I like. I pinned the buns together and this helped with shaping them a bit.

One criticism I do have about this pattern is that it does not have all the directions written out. Some people will state this is the sign of a lazy crocheter, but I like having my directions written out line by line. I am not a fan of a math project in the middle of my crocheting. I ended up writing out the directions for the increases and decreases in the book for future reference.

Crochet Toast

While it may appear there is an organized breakfast theme going on here, the toast came to be when I realized there was not enough of the off white to finish a sandwich I hoped to make. I had enough for about a slice and a half of bread, not two slices, since each slice is a double thickness. I looked at the bread and the egg and realized I had toast and an egg. This seemed like a perfect breakfast combo. It also gave me the chance to practice the pattern before moving on to making four of the same item that would need to be the same size. I do find it challenging to stay consistent.

This is another pattern I tried from Tasty Crochet: A Pantry Full of Patterns for 33 Tasty Treats. This has been a great resource for fun food projects. I used a birthday gift card to purchase more yarn, so I will get to the sandwich soon. I like the idea that the sandwich pattern has details like the tomato. You can expect more cooking crochet posts this week as I have been on a quest to meet my Christmas request.

Crochet Pancakes

I started on a food kick after getting a request for food presents for Christmas. I have never been a fan of fried eggs so no hunger involved as I was crocheting those, but the pancakes have left me with a desire to hit a pancake house. I have been thinking about experimenting with crocheting chocolate chip and blueberry ones.

The pattern for these pancakes comes from Tasty Crochet: A Pantry Full of Patterns for 33 Tasty Treats. The butter is actually an adaptation of Frankenstein's head from Gourmet Crochet's Monster Mash Amigurumi. For those of you who may wonder if Gourmet Crochet is a sponser, sadly no. I have never even received one free pattern. I just ordered another set of pattern books though, as I am a huge fan of the amigurumi items available there.

There is no butter pattern in the book and the whip cream pattern was not quite what I was looking for. Frankenstein's head, when made smaller gave me the basic shape I was trying to create. Sometimes we do not need to recreate the wheel, we just need to find a pattern that looks like the shape we are aiming to make.

Pumpkin Amigurumi

This is the second pattern I used from Gourmet Crochet's, Monster Mash Amigurumi. Before I knew it a Pumpkin Patch was emerging in my living room. I have several more to make, but these work up very quickly and are so cute when finished. The first one I made had balance issues as the bottom was not flat when completed. However, after the first the rest were great. I love the fact they are small and do not take up too much room. Kids can use these are part of their fall playsets or they make great decorations. For people with small kids they have the benefit of being adorable decorations that can fall to the ground multiple times without breaking.

This pattern book does not have a scarecrow, but I am think with some color changes the patterns for Frankenstein and Dracula would adapt easily enough to put a scarecrow in my pumpkin patch. It may not be this year, but by next year the kids will find one in their Halloween packages.

Fake food has long been a favorite toy among the younger generations in our family. I remember hunting through dollar stores trying to find a variety of the plastic foods for family members to have for pretend play. I am pleased to realize that there are patterns for crochet and knitting that will provide alternatives.
