Next To You Prayer Shawl

This is a free Lion Brand pattern designed to promote their Coboo yarn. You can find the pattern here.

I love the softness of the Coboo yarn and the texture of the shawl is beautiful despite my lack of photography talents.

One challenge is a one typical of cotton yarns and that is that it splits constantly. I found myself working carefully to keep the yarn intact. However, seeing the person who received this wrap themselves in it and sink into it it was well worth the challenge of working around the splitting. In fact I've ordered enough yarn in lichen for a second one for someone who prefers green to the suggested lilac.

I didn't record the hook size on the pattern but I know I went up significantly and I've started the second one since my yarn arrived. When I settle on the hook size for it I will update this post and write it on the pattern as this seems to be a pattern I'd repeat again as it makes a light weight comforting shawl.

Walled Garden Prayer Shawl

I borrowed Modern Crocheted Shawls and Wraps from the library before purchasing. When I saw the Walled Garden pattern I knew I wanted the book.

Sadly I was in a rush to get the pictures taken as we were headed out when I took these but the colors and the texture on this shawl are wonderful. This actually is one I would love to have for myself. This was the first prayer shawl I made for a specific person not just to be given out randomly and I knew who I'd make it for when I saw the pattern. The key was finding the yarn. Lately manufacturers introduce beautiful colors and then sadly by the time you purchase a book or pattern the yarn may no longer be available.

When I first started searching for Caron Simply Soft Rose Garden it was challenging to find in the amounts I needed. The pattern requires 7 skeins and since the yarn was hard to find and I am known for needing more than the pattern requires I ordered 9 from Mary Maxim as they were the only ones who had the colors and the amount I wanted. There shipping is often expensive but if you can wait they do occasionally have shipping deals and that's when I ordered.

Sadly, my pictures aren't great but the colors really do give you that feeling of being surrounded by a beautiful garden. It is a heavy shawl as you can imagine with it using even 7 small skeins of yarn. However, come winter I expect it will be a nice reminder of the beauty of summer when we don't have the beautiful summer flowers to show us.

Lacework Wild Fire Prayer Shawl

I love fall colors so when I decided on a second Lacework Prayer Shawl from the now out of print The Prayer Shawl Ministry Volume 2, I decided to work with Homespun's Wild Fire.

This makes a heavier but very comforting shawl. If I ever make one for myself this would be on my list of pattern choices. I like the weight of it and I'd likely go with the Wild Fire or the Blue Lagoon as I like both of the finished looks with this pattern.

This worked well for me with a K hook.

Topaz Prayer Shawl

I don't blog as frequently as I should but I do like to catch up on my projects as I often come back here to revisit projects when I start new ones. Keeping a record here of what I attempted, where I found the pattern and what I changed has been quite helpful over the years. As I've been working on doll clothes again I find myself frequently checking because even from year to year I've made changes.

This shawl is Topaz Shawl from The Crocheted Prayer Shawl Companion.

I used Homespun yarn but with so many colors disappearing I can't find a grey close to this being currently sold. The pattern calls for Red Heart Symphony Yarn which has been discontinued. The pattern called for an L hook not having one I tried my M hook and found the sizing to be good.

This shawl is in the style of the larger scarf shawls. When I started I was trying to make a range of shawls to appeal to a variety of people I didn't know. I've found different styles seem to appeal for a variety of reasons. For more recent projects I've been trying to target specific people looking for patterns and yarn weights/colors that are more fitting for the individual. The next few I'm writing about were in that general batch for anyone in need.

Lacework Prayer Shawl

This pattern comes from Leisure Arts The Prayer Shawl Ministry Volume 2. I ordered Homespun Lagoon for this and made it with the suggested K hook.

I've now completed three shawls. I'm hoping to get some doll clothes completed for the doll donation as well.

Lacework Prayer Shawl

I received a Homespun donation from a very kind woman in AL last week and I decided to start another prayer shawl while I continued to look for the tulip I need to finish another shawl I'm working on.


This pattern comes from The Prayer Shawl Ministry, Volume 2 (Leisure Arts #4622) and I've enjoyed making it before. Despite the weight of the Homespun the pattern makes for a lighter shawl and it is also a relaxing pattern to work on while in distracting circumstances.

It's been hot here and it's only with the AC that I've been able to tolerate the heavier Homespun yarn. It gets warm quickly. I have been neglectful of donating the shawls so I feel compelled to get back to making them along with my doll donations and toys.

I'm working on a holiday ami project at the moment. It is a slightly different style than I'm used to working on, but I'm hopeful of a good outcome and I hope to make a few to cover the holidays. We will have to see how it all works out.

Green Prayer Shawl

I started this prayer shawl a year ago and then sort of hit a crochet funk and it took me a while to get crocheting again. When I started again my focus was on getting the dolls ready for the donation, but I kept looking at the sad shawl waiting for me to finish it. A couple of weeks ago when had the chance to go back to my library yarn group, I decided it would be the perfect project to take and finish up.

I adapted the Baptismal shawl from The Crocheted Prayer Shawl Companion: 37 Patterns to Embrace, Inspire, and Celebrate Life that I purchased a while back. I liked the pattern and realized Homespun would create a warmer, heavier shawl than the one pictured, but I was OK with that knowing it was going to a Prayer Shawl ministry.

I've almost finished a pink shawl using tulip Homespun yarn, but I'm one skein short. The place I normally get my Homespun was out, so I'll have to pursue other alternatives. While I'm waiting, I started another shawl using some yarn sent to me from a wonderful person in AL who no longer works with Homespun.

I found some wonderful patterns during the Labor Day sales and am looking forward to some different kinds of projects after I finish off these Prayer shawls.

Tranquil Diamonds Prayer Shawl

This prayer shawl was made using the Tranquil Diamonds Shawl pattern found in Crocheted Prayer Shawl Companion, The: 37 Patterns to Embrace, Inspire, and Celebrate Life.

This was a fun pattern to work on and slightly different from any of the others I had previously made. The only challenge I had was in not reading the directions correctly on how the diamond was formed. Looking back it now seems logical. At the time it created some confusion for me and I had to pull it out and consider logically what the directions were asking of me to complete the task.

I'm still trying to locate a place in my house that will allow proper lighting for the prayer shawls. The doll shots work well in the brighter lights of my kitchen. Finding a place with great lighting to take the shawl shots has not been as easy.

Wide Scarf Prayer Shawl

I have my second prayer shawl meeting tonight and I've finished 6 prayer shawls to bring. This is the fifth and I'll be posting pictures of the sixth one on Wednesday. I started a seventh one last night to work on during the meeting tonight. I am quite surprised. I had expected to finish one. Generally, I find it hard to focus on projects that repeat rows for a considerable amount of time. However, I seem to have picked a good time to start these projects. I don't seem to be able to focus on my doll projects at the moment and as long as I keep changing patterns each time, the repeated rows seem to be rather relaxing.

This pattern is the cover pattern from The Prayer Shawl Ministry: Reaching Those in Need (Leisure Arts #4225) called the Wide Scarf.

Several people suggested trying Walmart for the Homespun yarn, our local Walmart does carry it, and the price is the cheapest I've found, slightly under $5. The only place close in price I've seen so far is Knitting Warehouse and that requires shipping. It seems pretty popular and I couldn't get enough of all of the colors I wanted to finish a shawl, but I got enough to make my next few projects. It is easy enough to return to get my next supply as long as they keep carrying it.

Triangular Prayer Shawl

When I picked up a copy of The Prayer Shawl Ministry: Reaching Those in Need (Leisure Arts #4225) I knew this would be one of the first items I made. I am experimenting with different types of shawls, but something about the triangle shaped shawls keeps drawing me back.

I really liked the finished edging on this shawl. It gave the shawl a nice look when it was done.

Still am working on improving my pictures. When you click on the picture it gives you a better look at the structure of the shawl, but still limits the color. I'm having a hard time finding a place I can hang the shawl and still get good light. I love the look of the Homespun yarn though and I wanted to demonstrate how pretty it looks close up so I took some quick shots to show the pattern.

I started on the shawl shown on the cover of this book. I have a crochet/knitting group meeting this week so I may have another prayer shawl finished before next week's prayer shawl meeting. These work up much faster than I would have anticipated.

I am going to have to keep my eyes out for Homespun yarn sales. While I can keep working through my supply of worsted, many of these call for bulkier weight yarns.

Textured Prayer Shawl

This prayer shawl was made using the Textured Bead pattern found in Crocheted Prayer Shawl Companion, The: 37 Patterns to Embrace, Inspire, and Celebrate Life that I'm finding to be a great resource. It worked up quickly and I found it was clear when a row was off. I like when I can catch a mistake quickly and resolve it so I don't have multiple rows to fix.

I have my second prayer shawl meeting coming up in a few weeks and I am pleased to say this is the third shawl I finished. It does have an option to add beads, but since I'm new to prayer shawls and I've never worked with beads I decided not to use that option for this shawl.

Up until now I've been using up yarn for my stash, or in the case of the first shawl I made, donated yarn from the Prayer Shawl Group. However, I started working on a shawl from The Prayer Shawl Ministry: Reaching Those in Need (Leisure Arts #4225) and I picked up some Lionbrand Homespun yarn to complete the project.

Double Hug Prayer Shawl

This is the Double Hug Prayer Shawl made using the pattern found in Crocheted Prayer Shawl Companion, The: 37 Patterns to Embrace, Inspire, and Celebrate Life that I recently purchased after borrowing from the library.

I made this one using Hobby Lobby's I Love This Yarn that I had in my stash. I found the Granny style pattern easy to work on and quite relaxing. Having a pattern that I didn't have to check constantly was great when went got to crochet/knitting group meetings. My doll patterns tend to be too complicated to share socially and get anything productive finished.

My pictures are still not quite where I want them, but I think hanging the shawl is an improvement over my first attempt to photograph a shawl.

I have my third shawl over half done. I am enjoying exploring this new type of crochet project. I already have yarn lined up to work on some additional projects.

My First Prayer Shawl

I mentioned last week that I had joined a Prayer Shawl Ministry Group at my Church. When I got home from the first meeting, I dug out some leaflets I had, downloaded some free patterns from the Internet, and even went online to reserve some books to preview from the library. I like variety.

As I started working on this project, I realized how nice it is to have a project that I can work on and just relax as I am doing it. This particular project works in threes so when you get to the end of the row, if you have done the row correctly, you have an even outcome. If you made a mistake, it is very clear. It makes it the perfect project to work on when you might be distracted.

This shawl is called Comfort and it comes from Prayer Shawls II (Annie's Attic: Crochet) a leaflet I picked up when it was on clearance at Annie's Attic. I love the texture it created as I was working with the yarn. I used a One Pounder of Caron I picked up while I was at the meeting. While the pattern didn't finish off the ends, I didn't like the leaving the ends unfinished so I chose to finish it off with a shell. The One Pounder didn't leave me with enough to finish off the shawl so, I chose grey because I thought it looked good against the blue.

I am used to taking pics of dolls and toys. I need to find a better method to show off the shawls.

I started the Double Hug Shawl from Crocheted Prayer Shawl Companion, The: 37 Patterns to Embrace, Inspire, and Celebrate Life that I borrowed from the library. After previewing it, this is on my buy list. I have a wedding to attend in July and I am thinking a Double Hug one in black might be a nice addition to my wardrobe. There are several other patterns I can see making to donate.

This is also helping my stash busting goals. I had bought some I Love This Yarn for a project and never got to it. Now it’s going to a good cause.

Thankful Thursday: Prayer Shawl Ministry

I have posted many times how thankful I am for my online groups, especially Crochetville. The online community is wonderful and supportive. However, I have long wished for a local community to sit and work with to meet people and to have that personal experience. I recently started going to Church in a town not too far from here. I was thrilled to see a notice for Prayer Shawl meetings and while I had to wait a few weeks for the monthly meeting, I got to go this week.

It was so wonderful to sit with a community of women and just chat. I was the only crocheter, but I can live with that. I even had the chance to teach someone the magic circle. One of the woman, also gave me information about another group that meets in the same town twice a month and I am going to see what I can do to make some of those meetings, too. I am feeling very blessed and hopeful as I post this. One of my dearest wishes has been granted.

When I got home, I dug out some Prayer Shawl books I had purchased on clearance from Annie's several years ago and downloaded some free patterns from Ravelry. The rules are pretty open about what styles we can make, size is more the issue. I also have a couple of books on reserve at the library to preview. I know from making doll clothes, I don’t stay motivated repeating patterns. Having variety will keep me motivated. At some point I think I'll start another page for free patterns as I collect them.

Working on human clothing is a big jump for me, but I will still have my doll donation project going. It is just nice to work with a community on something.

On another note, I would like to wish Happy Birthday to my Mom and my nephew. I hope you both have special days.
