Kits for Kids 2026

Last winter when I dropped off the Aztec Wishes donations there was talk of a new service project for kids moving into foster care. The plan was just being discussed and I reached out in March to find out the collection was being closed in April. My focus is clearly going to be for 2027 but I decided I would see if I could complete some small play sets to provide some comfort to kids who could use it.

Spring Finger Puppets

As you may have noticed if you drop by here and read about my holiday package posts, I've become intrigued with finger puppets to add to the packages. I found a free Spring Finger puppets pattern here. While great for Easter, I should have dug this out for the farm puppet project. These would have been great additions. However, I'm sure these little creatures can find their way to the already established farm puppet colony.

These patterns work up really quick. I had the three worked up in a couple of hours. I made my bag slightly larger than the egg sized suggested as I have plans to stuff some other items in there.

There are some unique features to the construction of these finger puppets which I would like to visit again. The bunny's ears are made as one piece. For someone like myself who finds sewing the pieces together to be a huge chore this was a wonderful gift. It also meant the ears weren't at different heights which can happen to me when I'm sewing them on separately. The sheep's fleece has texture due to the stitch chose made which is different from the other two characters.

Notes for me.

I sewed in the ends as I went along to avoid trying to have to turn the very small puppets inside out later. I added a beak to the chick that isn't in the pattern.. I am coming to like grey bunnies. The pattern had brown which I knew I wasn't going to use, but I didn't want a white sheep and I white bunny.

Three Little Pigs Finger Puppets

The Easter box was mailed, but I still have a few projects from that to post as well as a few local Easter projects and birthday projects I am working on.

The Three Little Pigs project was one I started before Christmas when I made the Little Red Riding Hood Set. The pattern is available for purchase here. The Little Red Riding Hood pattern is available for purchase there as well.

I love combining finger puppets with a book for a gift. My only disappointment was that I couldn't find a really artistic version of the Three Little Pigs. I found a beautifully illustrated Little Red Riding Hood. However, while I could find multiple alternate verisons of the Three Little Pigs, there doesn't seem to be a really nicely illustrated one on the market. I settled for an new early reader edition and a second hand Golden Book copy I picked up at the library book sale.

The puppet's were fun and easy to make. I found the buildings to be more challenging. I never fault the designer, I find other's usually can figure these construction projects out. I ended up sewing the brick details to the house, because I couldn't get the crochet pattern to work for me and my time was limited with my mailing deadline. I have not seen any more fairy tale puppets on her Etsy site. I sent her a message to find out if she's considering designing more as I would love to have more to make.

Fairy Tale Finger Puppet Set

Thankfully you can finally see the new dragon face in this group shot. The finger puppets can be challenging to get good photographs of when they are not taken in use.

I really like this set and hope they enjoy many hours of story telling. I am planning on adding additional friends and maybe working on the Crochet World castle as part of my Easter package. We will have to see where my crocheting and writing take me before spring comes. It is odd to be discussing Easter when most people have not begun to think of Christmas, but when you are making stuff, you have to plan ahead to have it finished.

Princess Finger Puppet Pink Dress

As I mentioned in previous posts I have been working on a fairy tale finger puppet theme using different free patterns I have found over the last year. While I liked the hair design on the previous princess, the neck and other parts of this princess were easier to work on and complete. She has more of the fairy tale look and less of the ordinary princess look of the first one I posted.

Princess Finger Puppet Yellow Dress

This was the second pattern from Crochet World's April 2010 bonus patterns. I liked certain parts of this pattern better than the other princess I will be discussing, but the neck did not work well which was frustrating. I thought the hair was an improvement over the first princess I made and I think I may use it for future doll puppets royal and common. However, the neckline made this puppet VERY challenging to get her to look right.

I have not given up on the pattern. I still like this princess as she is not the stereotypical fairy princess, but more an ordinary girl with royal lines. I have learned a few things from the process and can see where adjustments can be made.

Crochet Pig Finger Puppet

As I mentioned earlier in the week I am working my way through a book of finger puppets Finger Puppets 12 Designs To Crochet by Susan Pippin. I really like combining my love of making Ami's with puppets. This particular pattern book was a real find when I was buying vintage patterns. I am realizing as I master the basic techniques that I can move beyond the patterns in the book to create what I want.

For instance after finishing this pig I had a real desire to make a fairy tale set out of these puppets. The Three Little Pigs would be perfect, but there is no wolf. I will post soon about my wolf solution and hopefully an update on the Three Pigs project.

I am working on a flat puppet project and while interesting it is not nearly as fun as these little ami puppets have been during the creation phase.

Crochet Frog Finger Puppet

One of my younger relatives is a fan of frogs. I wrote in an earlier blog about making the Teddy Bear amigurumi finger puppet from Finger Puppets 12 Designs To Crochet by Susan Pippin. Once I found out about the frog, he had to get on my Christmas list.

Now all the patterns have arms and legs, but as I have been working my way through the book I have made some different choices. I did start on the legs for the frog, but I decided to leave him with the arms because the legs seemed to get in the way of the puppet, in this instance. I have another project I will be writing about later where I chose to add the legs. For me it is all about how it looks when I go to assemble the puppet.

Amigurumi Finger Puppets

I have been looking for more finger puppet patterns since I made the dragons for Easter. I found a crochet book, but nothing that really appealed to me. Then I discovered an out of print pattern in my vintage pattern hunt. These finger puppets actually were created to look like Amigurumi animals that were not finished as animals but as finger puppets.




The cap next to the bear is the item crocheted for the actual finger puppet. The pattern than calls for the person making the item to turn the finger cap inside out creating a lip that can be sewn to the opening of the puppet. This allows the body of the puppet to be sealed. The head and body are one piece, but since the finger does not come near the head at all, safety eyes can be used on the project instead of sewing eyes. The pattern uses moveable eyes, but since I cannot find ones to sew on and I do not like the possibility of them falling off, I like the idea of substituting safety eyes.



Creating the finger cap was a creative way to make more detailed finger puppets. Many of the books and patterns I have looked at have had disappointing details in their patterns. Those that are detailed can be challenging to work on because of the small areas that they create the features. This patterns utilized skills I was already using in making my Ami's and added the basic finger puppet to the mix.



This bear still needs to be assembled but I wanted to document the process prior to putting him all together. The pattern has twelve creatures to create, but I can see how this technique could easily be applied to other small ami's.

Dragon Finger Puppets

I had fun making some unique Easter basket toys for the younger relatives. These crochet Dragon Finger Puppets were easy to make and so cute when finished. They are part of a free pattern offering for a complete castle and fairy tale play set that can be found in the Finger Puppet Links on this site. The pattern was created by Melissa Mall at Crochet Me. The Castle patterns can be found in the Toy Links.






















I did use plastic eyes in my puppets as I really like the way they looked. Providing a backing for the eyes can be challenging, but I thought it was worth the final finished product. You can also choose to embroider the eyes. I do want to attempt the two castles which can also be found in the links. I hope at some point to complete the complete fairy tale set.
