Brachiosaurus

I've been collecting Planet June's animal patterns for years. Her dinos are a particular favorite of mine as they work up quickly and her directions are pretty clear and direct. You can purchase the pattern here. She also sells sets of patterns which sometimes make the patterns more affordable as do sales. I believe DH gifted me a couple of the dino sets as presents because dinos are popular gifts.

This was a great chance to use up some sport yarn I've had left over from various projects. In many respects this dino project was my orphan yarn project. It was a great chance to dig into some skeins that I'd had left over from other projects or were my "extra" skein I'd bought so I wouldn't run out when working on another gift. Now of course I need to find a way to finish them off so they stop taking up space.

Just so I don't confuse anyone these dino patterns call for regular worsted weight yarn. I wanted smaller dinos which is why I decided to dig into my sports yarn stash. I wanted a collection that would be fun but take up less room. The lighter weight yarn helped bring down the overall size of the animals.

Plesiosaur

This is the third dinosaur I made for my donation project. The pattern is from Wolf Dreamer's Dino Buddies patterns that my husband purchased for my birthday. I continued my stash busting goal and used up some Bernat Super Value Lilac I had left over from a previous project.

This has quickly become one of my favorite dino patterns and one I keep returning to when I need a quick toy pattern for family, friend, or donation.

Parasaurolophus

Parasaurolophus is the second dino I finished for my donation project. The pattern was part of Planet June's Dinosaurs set of 3 I received for my birthday. This dino was part of my stash busting goal. I used a ball of Kelly Green Bernat Super Value Yarn that has been in my bag of yarn balls for a while now.

I loved the face on this project. I have liked the way Planet June designs her faces and horns. I still prefer the tails and bodies of Gourmet Crochet's Amigurumi Dinosaurs.

Dimetrodon

I finished my first donation dino for the project I have been blogging about for weeks. I have been promising to get going on this project forever and it feels so good to have one I can send off to the Church. I hope to have some friends to go with him. The plan was to have a herd. However, each journey or herd starts with the first.

This guy was made using Planet June's Dimetrodon pattern. I got the pattern as part of her Dinosaur Set of 3 for my birthday. You can purchase it as an individual pattern. This is the second pattern I have made from this set. The combination of detailed directions and zoomed in pictures that demonstrate the stitches make her patterns wonderful to follow.

I used Red Heart Super Saver from my stash to finish this guy. I am in a stash busting mode. While I keep buying yarn for specific projects, I am determined to use my amigurumi's as a reason to destash when possible.

Dinosaurs Find New Homes

I am sure I am not the only one that starts making a project with an intended recipient in mind only to find that there was another purpose for the project you never realized.

These two found a new home this weekend. I was supposed to have moved them to the Christmas present box, but somehow they have been living on the piano since their photography session. They never made it up to the attic to wait for their Christmas shipping date.

This weekend we had a close family member visiting and she was talking about the dinosaurs I had made for one of her grandsons that another grandson was now enjoying playing with, too. Sure enough, these dinosaurs are off on a new adventure to go to a home where they will be well loved and have hours of play. After all, every toy dreams of a child that will love them. Yes, I watched too much Toy Story. Now I have dinosaurs to make to donate and I need to restart my Christmas dinos. However, I have the comfort of knowing the ones that left are going to be very happy fellows and will have the companionship of other dinos I made.

Plesiosaur Crochet Dinosaur

I finished the first dinosaur from Wolf Dreamer's Dino Buddies patterns that my husband purchased for my birthday.

I found the directions to be clear and easy to follow. I used Red Heart Super Saver Yarn and saftey eyes.

I am really excited about my dino projects. I want to make some for a family birthday close to Christmas and others for Christmas presents. I am also thinking they would be good for donations if I can get myself organized. I am developing a collection of patterns that will delight the children and keep me from never wanting to make another dino again. As much as I love Gourmet Crochet's Amigurumi Dinosaurs, I have made so many that I needed to try something new.

Brontosaurus the Dinosaur Project Continues

I was so pleased with the second brontosaurus. I liked the color and using a smaller hook and better sewing techniques this guy actually stands up better, too. I was thrilled when I saw him coming together at how much better he looked than the first one I made. Looking at the sewing improvements, I think I can actually fix the legs on the first one to improve his ability to stand up.

My skills have come a long way since I started working on these projects and this guy reminds me to stop always criticizing what I cannot do and be happy with what I have learned to do better.

My Thanksgiving projects are continuing. After finishing the Hello Kitty project, I think I discovered a way to rescue a Pilgrim Weeble like woman that I almost abandoned in frustration because I could not get the pattern to work. After learning a few tricks from pulling out Hello Kitty's outfit a few times, I think I can now make the Weeble like Pilgrim lady work and even perhaps create a Mr. Pilgrim to be her companion for the holidays. An old Annie's Attic pattern is providing me with the chance to create a pair of Pilgrim bears. When those are completed, I will post those pictures as well.

Dinosaur Amigurumi

The project is complete. It feels great to work through an entire book and actually to have attempted and completed all the projects. Some were greater successes than others were, but each was a learning process that has taught me new skills and given me more confidence in trying new things. I will be back to this book before Christmas.

For those seeking the pattern book it can be found at Gourment Crochet's, Amigurumi's Dinosaurs.

My next project is an old Annie’s Pattern Club pattern for a farm. Another Christmas present on my list.

Wooly Mammoth Amigurumi

This pattern sold me on buying this book. The wooly mammoth was adorable and I had never seen a pattern for one before. When I read the pattern, I decided to make the mammoth last because I realized it was going to be different from the other patterns. On the surface, it appears to be simple, but as I read the directions and worked through them, there were more challenges than I expected.

The body itself was straight forward and as expected. The head worked up smaller than I anticipated based on the picture, but the row count seemed accurate. I was using a yarn I had never used before, so this could have affected the outcome. Gauge could also be a factor as none is stated. As stated in earlier blogs this will not be the only one I make, so I will have a chance to experiment and see what works.

The directions on the tusks did not work as I expected. When I switched from sc to sl I found I had a smaller size appropriate tusk for the animal I was creating. Again, this could be a result of gauge, yarn, or the size of the mammoth’s head.

Overall, I really like this pattern and am looking forward to applying what I have learned to another mammoth.

Pterodactyl Amigurumi

This was the only pattern in the series that I questioned the pattern, not just my skill level. The pattern book picture shows a triangle that creates the wing for the dinosaur. A rounded wing is the result of crocheting in the round as written in the pattern. I am going to experiment with the written pattern further and work on adapting the pattern on my own to see if I can create one that looks more like the one in the book. With the lack of wingspan, I adapted how I attached the arms as well. Since I have more requests for dinosaur presents, I will have time to practice the patterns.

That being said, Terri, as he has been lovingly named, still has drawn some popular attention. Thus, the increase in requests for dinosaur presents. I am going to continue to work on creating a pterodactyl with wings that are closer to the original intent. I will post any progress I make.

Triceratops Amigurumi

This was the project I was least interested in starting and most pleased with when it was finished. The picture seemed awkward when I viewed the cover. However, as I began working on the project, seeing him in a squatted position seemed to work. This project was one of the most enjoyable because I had such a low anticipation of the outcome.

The triceratops was one of the easiest of the patterns to create. The most challenging part was getting the back legs positioned correctly. I have learned to pin all the legs prior to sewing anything to an animal.

One of the goals I presented myself with at the start of this project was not to buy any yarn to finish it. It has been fun digging through yarn stashes to find matches. I wanted fun colors and was not concerned about following the pattern color suggestions in all cases. This is working out.

Stegosaurus Amigurumi

I completed the next step in my dinosaur Christmas project. The pattern for the Stegosaurus, or as he became known as I was working on him Steggi, came from Gourment Crochet's, Amigurumi's Dinosaurs.

When I started this project, I thought the Stegosaurus would prove more challenging than the previous two dinosaurs I had made, the T-Rex and the brontosaurus. Creating the body was a typical project. I think when I make the plates again; I might try a lighter weight sports yarn. The plates were cute, but I think a lighter yarn might provide a more defined look. I can also experiment with hook size to see if that makes a difference as well. I learn a bit as I work through each one of these projects.

I will say as I have shown people the results of my efforts, this is one of the creatures that almost does not escape so I will say people still are finding him attractive.
