Baby Rabbit Finger Puppet

When I finished the Mother Rabbit finger puppet I made a decision that I needed to pick up the pace if I wanted to be able to mail the package the Saturday before Easter. My choice was to make the last 3 heads all at once and then finish off the puppets individually.

One of the lessons I learned with Baby Rabbit is I make mistakes more easily the later it gets at night. I had no trouble finishing the heads without mistakes. However, you will notice Baby bunny's ears have a bigger block of pink than all the other bunnies. That was a result of making them late at night and sewing them on and finishing them off. It wasn't untl the next morning when I looked at all the bunnies lined up that I realized the baby had different ears but I wasn't going to cut them off and replace them. Baby Rabbit is just different from the other bunnies.

For those of you interested you can purchase the pattern here. The pattern suggests size 20 thread I used Red Heart Crochet, Thread Size 10 white, Aunt Lydia's Crochet Thread Size 10, Orchid Pink, and Aunt Lydia's Crochet Size 10 Thread, French Rose. I changed the bib color to Aunt Lydia's Crochet Thread, Size 10, Maize because I had left over yarn from an Our Generation doll project that I've been trying to finish off and I didn't have the color suggested by the pattern. The suggested 1.25mm hook worked with the size 10 thread.

Robbie Bunny

I ordered the Cottontails kit from Mary Maxim which you can purchase here after seeing it in the catalog. When you click on the kit details it tells you that the yarn for this kit is Ultra Mellospun but the white yarn is actually Mary Maxim Baby Value Yarn. Only the yarn for the clothing is Mellospun. According to the website the Baby Yarn is a 4 weight but it is more like a sport or DK weight and it while soft I had 2 issues with it.

First, with a g hook I found the stitches were too big not to show stuffing so I went down to an e hook to get the right look. Secondly, it was not a great yarn to use when you want tight stitches like one uses with amigurumi because I found it difficult to frog the stitches after making the tight, like when I realized I needed to move from a g hook to a smaller hook to keep the stuffing from showing.

I made the second bunny using worsted weight yarn on hand and found I had fewer issues with the yarn.

I have much to learn about sculpting so I will take the blame for that part of the pattern challenge. I found however, that I remade the body the second time when I made the girl doll because the neck on this doll was not solid enough to hold the head up until I did some reworking when I followed the original pattern. It had a bit of a bobble headed look to it. I am sure the fault could easily be mine but directions sometimes can help avoid these challenges, too.

The shoes were adorable. I often find patterns for girl amigurumis with shoes, but sneakers for the boys are also cute. I chose to sew the buttons over the holes as I liked the look better and wasn't planning on removing the clothing after the fact. I made the bow tie but chose not to add it after making it. I liked the way he looked in his overalls. The tail was a cute addition.

I am not a huge fan of having to embroider facial features. The kit comes with eyes and I added a nose that I purchased from CRC Crafts.

With all that is going on in the world I am happy to have some new Easter decorations. I decided to keep this pair and work on a different pattern to send out in the Easter box.

Rabbit in a Carrot Sleeping Bag

I've been slowly collecting patterns by this designer as they are perfect little presents to add to packages. I received this pattern as a Valentine's present and set out to make it right away for the Easter package. You can purchase the pattern here.

There are tons of patterns free and paid on the market. I love these patterns because the ones I've made are simple to make up and they all have little accessories that add some fun for little ones play time. I previously made the dog with bed for a birthday present and I've been collecting the holiday themed patterns to use for my holiday packages.

Thanks to a friend's search for eyes I found pink noses from CR Crafts here. I've been able to find my eyes and regular noses locally for the most part but colored noses have been elusive and I usually need to get those online. This way I can remember where I ordered them from when I run out. I have no idea where my previous supply came from so had no ability to reorder.

Additional notes:

I'd make the carrot wider for several rows and slightly longer before reducing the rows to the point. While you want the carrot to be tight so rabbit doesn't fall out, you also want it to be easy to get the rabbit all the way in and out.

I liked the grey rabbit. White was too white against the orange. The brown was OK but I think perhaps an off white if I needed a second rabbit again.

Claudia Cottontail

Claudia Cottontail is an adaptation of a Caolyn Christmas pattern found in an out of print Needlecraft Shop Book, Crochet Private Collection. The book was originally published in 1999 for those of you who might be interested in finding it.

My Claudia is slightly different from the author's. For one thing I don't have experience with soft sculpture needles and decided to forge ahead and make a more traditional ami. This is a skill I'd like to learn more about, but this is a time sensitive challenge and I needed to move forward.

I started with the suggestion of worsted weight yarn for this bunny, but it was huge. I ended up using some lighter sport weight yarn I'd bought previously. This caused a challenge when it came to cloth the bunny. I started with lighter weight cotton sport yarn I had on hand. However, Miss Cottontail was larger in the chest area and that required a medium white sport weight yarn to get the dress to fit in the bodice as it was too tight with the lighter weight sport yarn.

This one of those patterns I'd have loved to see the back side for both the dress and the hat. I think it would have helped with my on the fly adaptations. However, you work with what you get. The details were cute with this pattern. This bunny is quite modest as she has panties that remind me of the old fashioned pantaloons. I used a draw string to help make mine fit a bit better at the waist, but I thought they made a cute addition to the pattern.

I started this pattern well before the St. Patrick's Day box left but I ran into problems when I realized I needed more Knit Picks sports yarn as I'd fully intended to use worsted weight for the bunny and some heavier weight sport yarn I had on hand for the dress. Since I had to order yarn the project to a back seat until my order arrived. However, it will be ready to mail before my deadline and that is what really matters.

Sweetie Bunny

I was very fortunate to receive the Easter Bunny Gang from a very thoughtful Fairy Godmother as part of Crochetville's Wishlists. I started with Sweetie Bunny and I didn't quite get the white pattern the way I wanted it, I thought it was a great start. I love the hat that finishes off the outfit.

There are four different bunnies in this pattern although one repeats a pattern with different colors and a different style of eye. These work up quickly and are great additions for Easter baskets or just for fun ami's.

I have three finished and one more to do. I have to finish my amigurumi swap and then I can get back to my Easter box. They both have about the same deadline.
