Hello Kitty Santa Crochet

I have to thank Armina Ami-Nals for teaching me how to make Hello Kitty. This pattern is actually not her Santa pattern, but an adaptation of her Witch pattern. I have links to her patterns on the Hello Kitty page. You can find both links on the page and decide which you prefer. I love the dress of the witch and I have never worked with the fun fur so adapting the witch to Santa seemed an easier route for me.

I tried using double crochets for the dress and I liked the effect. I also started from the top of the arm, instead of the hand. This allowed me to add cuffs to the dress. If you follow my blog, you will know I am not a fan of sewing. I use safety eyes whenever I can instead of sewing eyes. Suncatchers introduced me to Hello Kitty noses. This is the first chance I have had to try the noses out and I prefer the way the safety nose works to the sewn noses I make.

The Santa Hat is comes from a doll pattern I have been working on. I worked the size to fit Hello Kitty's head. I bought a pom-pom maker, but have not had time to use it yet. Therefore, I am still using the packaged versions for my patterns. After my holiday crocheting is done, I plan to dive in to learning more about Loom Knitting so I can use all the looms I bought. Next year I may even have real pom-poms as well.

Let the Holiday Season Begin

I was flipping through my pictures trying to find which one to post and it amazes me just how many things are in my attic waiting to ship for Christmas and one birthday still happening before the holiday.

We generally start decorating the day after Thanksgiving. With a new dog who is still getting used to the house we have decided to back off a little with our decorations as we tend to have the motto if it doesn't move it gets decorated. I do not think she can handle the stress of that much change and temptation. So this year we are scaling back. It will be hard, but worth it for our new girl.

However, that does leave us with some time on our hands so perhaps I will get more done on my projects.

The Last of the Thanksgiving Dolls

Well for this year anyways the Thanksgiving doll theme is done. Monday night I finished the last Barbie outfit I needed for a birthday we were celebrating on Thanksgiving. I took the pictures of the American Girl Doll outfit on a Springfield doll and Barbie for my records and started working on a Hello Kitty Santa. Santa's elves' crochet hooks do not have time to stop.

I was very pleased with the final American Girl outfit. This is Darski's free Pilgrim outfit modified. I used the bonnet from the Pilgrim Weeble pattern and with just a few minor adjustments; it is the best one I have tried so far. This time I added the collar in the correct position, but used a button to close it as I never fully understood her directions for adding the collar. The button works and I may use the strategy again.

The Shady Lane Barbie was determined to be trouble. The pattern can be found in Timeless Fashion Dolls Volume 1, #495. I have no idea why since this was the second attempt using elastic. However, it just seemed everything was more challenging and each portion of the outfit determined to make me thankful it was completed and not needed for another year.

I am grateful that my skills have progressed to the point I was able to create these items for family this year. I am also thankful for people who have freely given of their talents and those who sell their patterns so I can make these items. Since I have started crocheting finding non-thread Barbie doll crochet patterns has become increasing challenging. Finding simple American girl style patterns also not easy. However, I have seen my abilities increase and I am enjoying being able to do more than I was last year making toys and doll's clothes for kids. Next year I hope to be able to increase my donations to charities that collect toys for kids.

Ken and Barbie Pilgrims Crochet

Before I shipped the outfits out last week, I wanted a shot of the couple together. I had made and taken pictures of the outfits at different times and the dolls were never dressed at the same time to take a group photograph. Therefore, before the clothes were packed I wanted a shot.

Someone commented on a Yahoo group that I belong to that she believed Barbie clothes should only be made in thread after seeing my blog. She was upset that many of the patterns I had found were not thread patterns. I do love the look of thread on the dolls. However, I have yet to master the ability to crochet with thread. I am extremely grateful to the people who have very generously taken the time to create patterns that do use alternate yarn for those of us who are not competent with thread. Given a choice of no clothes for dolls or bulky heavier weight clothes made from baby or sport weight yarn, I can assure her that kids would prefer to have doll clothes. Thankfully, my efforts are improving.

I say this kindly to all people who come here for the free pattern links. Be grateful to the artists who share their work with us. If you do not find something of use, so be it. When someone donates his or her work to use at no cost to us, it is a gift. Nobody forces you to take it. I for one am very grateful that the many doll, toy, and house patterns have allowed me to provide gifts to friends, family, and charities. I buy many new and vintage patterns, but some of the most wonderful patterns have been those shared by generous people who freely donate their work online. It has allowed me to stretch my money to do more.

Mrs. Pilgrim Bear

I feel like I have been talking about this poor bear forever. I finished her body and then it took forever to get back to her head as I wandered off to work on other Thanksgiving projects. However, I do love her and want a set for myself before next Thanksgiving.

This bear was created using Annie's Attic Crochet Pilgrim Bears, 8B040. The original pattern is slightly different with more details as I mentioned in my blog about Mr. Pilgrim Bear. However, for those who are interested the pattern is still widely available on the vintage market. Along with making a set for myself, I have a few others to make before the pattern will be retired I am sure.

The bears shipped out last Tuesday and should have arrived either last Friday, or Monday. I hope their journey was a safe one. Since I try to post my blogs in advance, it is not always easy to keep time in perspective. I know during Thanksgiving week my time to update is limited.

Crochet Pilgrim Weeble

This was actually one of the first projects I started and then abandoned to work on some other things. She is likely to be one of the only Thanksgiving projects I end up having done for my own house, as she did not make the cut for the trip across country. I may finish her husband on Thanksgiving Day. I like having something to keep my hands busy and a holiday Amigurumi could be fun.

This project was actually not called a Weeble, but a Pilgrim Pal and can be found in The American School of Needlework's Crochet & Knit Favorites of Rita Weiss, 1023 Volume 2, 1983. It is actually a cute book with patterns for each month of the year. While I am interested in some of the other patterns, I did buy it for the Pilgrim Weebles.

The interesting thing about working with patterns is how you learn to adapt them. The bonnet for this girl is actually folded in half. I am going to experiment with the pattern because I think it would make a great American Girl Doll bonnet and be better than the first one I made for the Pilgrim outfit.

American Girl Pilgrim

This outfit was made with a free pattern from a very generous designer Darski. You can find the pattern here. One strategy I have started to use when downloading patterns is to cut and paste and reorganize them into word documents for my own personal use. You will not find any of those documents here. I suggest you make them for yourself. However, I find that I can change the fonts, enlarge or bold certain areas to help me when I am working on a pattern. I can also reorganize lines as certain patterns bulk up directions in larger chunks than I want to work with in a line by line pattern. I meant to mention that in an earlier blog, but I like to share orginizational techniques with others. I learn a great deal by reading and listening to what others do, I like to share what I have learned as well.

I loved the dress pattern for this doll. I finally understood how to pull together a back and use buttons to close the back edge. It should perhaps be obvious, but it helped me work on a Barbie pattern, so I am thrilled at the new knowledge.

I chose to create my own cap, because I wanted something more of a bonnet than a cap. I used a modified version of the Shady Lane Barbie pattern. I also added cuffs like the Shady Lane Barbie pattern used.

After finishing this pattern I realized where I made the mistake on the Ken doll. As I mentioned before each new project seems to have something to teach me about another.

Ken Pilgrim

I have not made many Ken doll clothes. I made a few pairs of shorts and a shirt, but that was the extent of my efforts that have been split between amigurumi's, food patterns, American Girl clothes, and Barbie.

However, as Thanksgiving approached the free Pilgrim pattern haunted me. I really wanted to make a set to send for Thanksgiving. I looked the pattern over and it did not seem to intimidating.

The pants worked out well although in this picture with him sliding on the floor they do not appear to be even. I also figured out a better method for the feet after the pattern was done, but overall I was pleased with the bottom half. However, I could not make the pattern for the top work and had to try a different approach.

I confirmed my suspicions at a craft fair white elephant this weekend. I was looking at some dolls and picked up a Kelly, Tommy, and a Cabbage Patch doll to use as doll models in my projects. I also looked at a Ken while I was there and realized the shoulders on the doll I am working on are wider and far harder to move than the one at the sale. However, since the child and I have the same doll, buying the less developed Ken hardly helps me so I left him for another child to enjoy.

I was not completely satisfied with top of this outfit. Mine is joined in the back instead of the front. However, was a learning experience. After working on the American Girl doll Pilgrim, I learned some strategies that will help me in my next stab at this pattern.

Barbie Pilgrim Shady Lane

Once I learned about adding elastic, this became my favorite of the two Barbie patterns. The original Shady Lane pattern does not use elastic. Adding it made it a much easier project for me to work with in making a neat outfit with a closed back.

This pattern can be found at Shady Lane. It is in the pattern book Timeless Fashion Dolls Volume 1, #495.

The shawl and the style of bonnet also make this a favorite of mine. I have one more of these to make, but it does not have to be finished until Thanksgiving Day.

I am already thinking about how to adapt these patterns to create something for Kelly and Skipper for next year. Thankfully only one side of the family has the Kelly/Skipper dolls so I could make one set and be done. However, they all have additional Barbies, so I do not believe I am done with Barbie Pilgrim outfits, just yet.

Barbie Pilgrim with Free Pattern

I finally decided to get over my fear of elastic and try this pattern that can be found here. This pattern was discovered during my research for free Barbie patterns. Her site is a treasure trove of period and other crochet Barbie patterns. I listed many of them on my Barbie/Fashion Doll pages.

The elastic was not nearly as intimidating as I feared and I liked the fact it finally closed the back gap I have been struggling with when making my Barbie clothes with sports yarn. The dress pattern was easy to follow, but I found myself adjusting the cap to make it fit on Barbie's head. It could be my ability to follow directions and not the pattern.

I learn more from each one of these projects. As I mentioned in an earlier blog I have several of these outfits to make before Thanksgiving. I went back and made the Shady Lane Pilgrim dress and used my new found ability with elastic to make the pattern easier for me to work with and I will be writing about that in another blog.

Ken's Pilgrim outfit is finally finished and I will be posting his picture, the Shady Lane Barbie Pilgrim picture, and the American Girl Doll Pilgrim picture this week as I finally have the pictures on my computer.

I have one more Shady Lane dress to make before the holiday and then Barbie is done with the Pilgrim scenario for this year. Mrs. Pilgrim just needs her arms and she will be finished. I have a couple of other small projects that need to be completed for shipping by tomorrow. Then it is on to Christmas fashions and other holiday projects.

Thanksgiving Update

Anyone in my family will tell you once Halloween passes I get holiday fever. I love the spirit of Thanksgiving and Christmas and enjoy the various celebrations that surround them. I used to HATE taking classes in college in the fall because I knew once November hit that all my focus was gone. I always did better in the spring semester.

The craft sale season is kicking into full gear and this year I am eying it more with a sense of research and not just consumer interest. My husband is convinced I should think about doing some craft sales next year. I still am on the fence. However, I had the chance to visit with some of my favorite vendors this year. One of them very kindly shared her favorite craft site to buy eyes for my amigurumi and I truly appreciated her generous advice. I have more to visit in the next few weeks.

As for my Thanksgiving projects, I finished two Barbie dresses and now have one more to do. It seems the list keeps growing. Ken's outfit needs sleeves, a collar, and snaps. I have sleeves, a collar, apron, and cap to do for an American Girl pattern and then one more complete outfit to do. Then yes, poor Mrs. Pilgrim Bear and another Pilgrim need heads.

I decided on a schedule. Today I will finish Ken and the first American Girl Doll outfit, as those need to be mailed this week. Tomorrow I will have to finish Mrs. Pilgrim Bear and the other Pilgrim and Pilgrim Weeble as those too have to be mailed this week. Then I will move on to the items that are not being given until Thanksgiving Day. I am hoping with a schedule I can stop worrying and start finishing items.

I do have pictures to post of the first two finished Barbie’s. I hope to have those posted along with anything I finish today in the next week's postings.

American Girl Doll Bathrobe

This is the last of the items Mom sent me for my niece. The bathrobe was part of our sewing project we began last summer. I cut it out and Mom took it home to assemble and mail back to me.

Even if I complete nothing else before Christmas she should have a very well dressed doll. I have been asked to donate some American Girl items so I think I will be looming another hat and crocheting another poncho as I have a longer lead time on mailing the Christmas gifts than I do on the donation. My Mom will be sending 18" doll clothes for her great grandaughter's Springfield dolls so she should have plenty to wear. I still would like to complete a few more outfits of my own to add, though.

American Girl Red Sox Cheerleader

Those who have been following this blog know I got a box of doll clothes from my Mom to give to my niece on my husband's side for her birthday and Christmas. My husband and I both come from a families of big sports fans. When Mom was looking through Fun-to-Knit Doll Clothes one of the first patterns she commented on was the cheerleaders costume. She talked about making Patriot's cheerleaders costumes. That is fine for some of the other kids, but my niece is a HUGE Red Sox fan, so Mom made an outfit to suit her interests.

After talking with my husband we decided to hold this one for Christmas, so my Mom would get to see my niece open it when she drives up to visit us for the holiday.

American Girl Christmas Knitted Sweater and Pants

Mom chose to knit the sweater and pants pattern from Fun-to-Knit Doll Clothes in Christmas colors. I am planning on giving this to the child along with the holiday gown for her birthday prior to Christmas so her doll will be ready for Christmas.

I can laugh now, but getting the doll in and out of the clothes for a quick photo shoot was not as easy as one would think. Her hands kept getting stuck in the cuffs of the sweater and like a child she seemed to get tired of all the dressing up and changing of clothing.

It is nice to be able to get all the photographs finished at once and be able to get everything entered, but at times even the doll gets tired of cooperating.

American Girl Knitted Evening Gown

I am continuing to display Mom's work. I am very proud of the items she has completed. She is not only is sending them out to grandkids, giving them to the neighbor's kids, but also donating them to charities as well. She was actually SURPRISED that all her outfits sold at a craft sale to raise money for Veteran’s groups. I cannot convince her how amazed I am each time I receive a box of items to give to my niece on my husband's side. She ships all the stuff to my side directly. I do wish she had this interest when I was a kid.

For those who want to know where to find the pattern, this is from Fun-to-Knit Doll Clothes. When I saw the yarn she used to make this, I was so impressed. I cannot imagine the day when I will be comfortable working with this material.

American Girl Doll Poncho

After working on the Knifty Knitter Looms to make the hat and scarf for the doll I decided to make a poncho to wear with the hat. I used Maggie's Crochet Abby, Allie and Annie 18" Doll Outfits Pattern. I checked Annie's Attic and it appears they put it on clearance so it is only available now as a PDF pattern from Maggie's. I am always so surprised how quickly they advertise and then retire those patterns. I understand that scarcity pushes people to buy faster, but it seems I barely have time to consider before all the hard copies are gone. As I have mentioned I am not a huge fan of the PDF world. With our printer currently unconnected, it is even less appealing.

As you may have noticed the Springfield doll in this photograph is wearing a skirt with the poncho. If you botch the poncho in your first try and add too many stitches when converting the rib to the double crochets, you do actually get a cute skirt in the bargain. The result was too large for a poncho, but it amazingly fit the dolls waist without any need for elastic.

I do not know if I would ever have the patience to make one, but I like the idea of a poncho that has a neck warmer. As I was constructing that part of the pattern, I thought it would be an interesting adult pattern.

I have lots of other items on my to do list before Thanksgiving and Christmas, but I would like to give the skirt and the pants in this pattern a try soon.

American Girl Doll Loom Hat and Scarf

I was really proud of myself when I finished this hat and scarf. I have all but surrendered my knitting needles, but I really want to see if I can learn to use the Kniffty Knitters to produce some basic knitted items. I have a long way to go, but seeing the hat and the scarf on the doll has convinced me it is worth continuing the effort. I would like to progress to making a doll sized blanket to send as well.

I used the blue round knifty knitter for the scarf and the hat. I followed a basic hat pattern to make the brim on the hat and used the gather method to finish it off.

Mom and I cut out these blue jeans this summer during her visit. She bought a bunch of sewing patterns, material, and sewing notions to my house during her summer visit and we cut out doll patterns for the 18" dolls and Barbie. These jeans were one of the pairs we cut out and after sewing at home, she shipped me for my niece. For those that are curious the top is a dress pattern she knitted from Fun-to-Knit Doll Clothes. Of all the items she sent, this is the one I should wrap first as it will be the hardest to give up. I just love the way it looks.

American Girl Doll Hat My First Loom Attempt

I mentioned in previous blogs that I have been experimenting with loom knitting and had made a few doll hats. This was in fact my first hat made with single yarn on the pink flower loom. I did not want to waste yarn if I ended up not being able to complete the project so I used a single stand instead of the double stand, most people suggest. I have seen other projects like this one, so I decided to keep it.

The dress is from a box of clothes my Mom knit and sewed for a niece on my husband's side. I have been slowly converting Mom into making toys and doll's clothes for the last few years. I have intrigued her by buying her books and patterns. This dress comes from Fun-to-Knit Doll Clothes. I love the lacy look and feel of the dress.

I realized I could in fact get the loom to work and made the next hat on the same loom thinking it would fit. However, the second hat will be used for a winter Hello Kitty to be made later. While I thought the loom fit on the doll's head, it appears the blue Knifty Knitter does in fact fit better. The third hat was the charm.

Pilgrim Bear

This is the first of the Pilgrim Bears I have been talking about in previous blogs. The pattern is Annie's Attic Crochet Pilgrim Bears, 8B040. I see this offered often at vintage pattern sites and even eBay if anyone is interested. The Annie's pattern has far more detailed faces, but I liked the simpler look.

I learned so much making this bear. The pattern was easy to follow and I was amazed that the bear stood even before I added the cardboard to reinforce the shoes. I am currently working to adapt this style to a smaller version of a doll pattern to see if I can get the dolls to stand, too.

I did decrease the size of the bear by using a significantly smaller hook than the pattern called for as space is an issue where this guy will be traveling. I would not necessarily want him to be much larger when I make one for myself. He fits nicely on the piano.

The female Pilgrim is close to completion. As usual, I got distracted working on several other projects, but she should be ready for photographs soon. I have to get these packages ready to mail so they will arrive on time.

Fall is Moving Fast

I truly cannot believe Halloween is over. It seems like I have been working on Halloween projects forever and poof the night flew by so quickly. Of course, I was working on projects at the time, but still it seemed so fast. I have so many new Halloween projects to start after the Easter projects are finished.

While one of our Shelties, Bailey, loves the excitement, our newest, Katy is terrified by all these people coming to the house and retreated to her crate for comfort until the invasion was over.

I should have some new project pictures up this week. I have a few loom projects completed for the American Girl Doll. I also have a new crochet American girl project I finished to put up on the blog this week. I am excited about the Loom items. I am terrible with knitting needles in my hands, but it was so exciting to see hats and now a scarf come off the loom for my Christmas box of gifts going off with a Springfield doll this Christmas. One of my early hats was too small but it inspired me to work on a new Hello Kitty winter ami so hopefully that will be around soon as well.

I am looking forward to writing about the crochet project as it is one I think I will be making a few copies of to share. I have been busy with online shopping as well. Annie's Attic and JoAnn's have both had been having sales lately. I got my Loom supplies through JoAnn's and many new patterns to try out from Annie's. This morning I ordered more Caron by the Pound yarn from JoAnn's. I have trouble getting much in the way of color selection to purchase locally. Therefore, I decided just to order a selection of colors while it was on sale online. When it goes on sale locally by the time I get to the sale what few colors they do normally carry are usually already gone. I only recently started using it, but it is softer than the Red Heart and with the number of ami's I make, the larger portions are handy.
