Happy Thanksgiving

Well it is certainly not the Thanksgiving we've come to expect but there are certainly many reasons to be thankful this year.

I've decided to start being better about documenting my holiday projects so I can go back and remember what I made when. With that in mind I'm creating holiday posts that help me go back and search out projects that might be repurposed for a new cause.

I made these on Thanksgiving but I added it because I wanted to have it here as a reference when I went to see what I made in future years.

Turkey Hot Pad

I mentioned when I was finishing the Halloween hot pads I adapted from the mug rug pattern in Spooktacular Crochetthat I wanted to make some additional holiday hot pads by alternating the colors and finding different appliques. This is my first Thanksgiving one.

The original pattern called for Omega Sinfonia sport yarn and I continued with that for this project. I've been able to find limited colors of this yarn online at Hobby Lobby. I couldn't find any in our local store when I was there recently. My primary source for this yarn continues to be Creative Yarn Source. Again I have no association with the store, I just like to know where I can find yarn that is suitable for a project and lately cotton sport weight yarn has been something I've been searching for and buying more of online and I'm always open to knowing where to go for selection and price.

The colors used for the hot pad are cinammon, burgendy and gold. The turkey is primarly cinammon but the feathers are made from scarps of left over cotton from previous hot pad and ami projects that used both Sinfonia and Schachenmayr Catania sport cotton yarn.

For those of you new to hot pads and wondering why I use cotton over acrylic, acrylic melts. There are other natural yarns that may work but cotton is my go to for kitchen items.

I was looking for a free applique to use for this hot pad and found this one based on the hand turkeys kids used to make in school. You can find the pattern here. The pattern calls for size 10 crochet thread but I wanted a turkey that would fit the hot pad so I used the sport cotton and I was pleased with the outcome.

Thanksgiving Crochet Baby Bib

People may wonder why document so long after an event, well honestly if I look back at the stuff I've done several years ago, I'm often amazed at what I did. I might have thought I'd never have forgotten THAT project, but sure enough with time it faded and it is a wonderful feeling to go back and see what I did accomplish, sometimes cringing, but for the most part happy to see what I did and how I've grown. What frustrated me about the Thanksgiving box is I didn't get pictures of most of it. I sent out this bib along with Pete and Patty Pilgrim and the Pilgrim Girl Lovey. I also made the original Christmas version that I adapted to make this Thanksgiving bib from when I couldn't find one I liked. You can purchase that pattern here. For those who are interested I used Knit Picks cotton for both Thanksgiving and Christmas. It was affordable and works up nicely for kids bibs.

Dachshund Pilgrim

As I mentioned yesterday I've been working on a house warming project for a fellow dog blogger. This is the second ami I've completed for the project. This dog was made using a combination of patterns. I started out using a free Lion Brand Pattern found here. I didn't like the way the head looked, so I decided to end the pattern at the neck and use the head and tail pattern from the Teri Crews' pattern I wrote about yesterday.

For this dachshund I chose some yarn I had been given a while back as it was close to the color of one of her dogs. It was a wool blend and a bit rougher than the acrylic yarn I usually use for my ami's.

The hat was adapted from a free Ken doll pattern found here.

The Traveling Pilgrim

Finding Crochetville was an amazing blessing. The encouragment and support I have had has enabled me to grow as a crocheter. People have pointed me towards patterns, helped me with my doll projects, and sent me wonderful presents during swaps and wishlists.

I love the 5 Inch Lots to Love dolls. I rarely have enough time to work on the small thread projects they can wear. However, this fall I carved out enough time to make myself the Pilgrim girl outfit from Holiday Itty Bitties which now seems to be out of print. When Crochetlist posted the holiday wishlists I realized I'd love the matching boy or really any of the tiny holiday outfits for the dolls. It was a long shot, but most wishes are made on that premise.

I read a post on Crochetville a couple of days ago telling the story of the Traveling Pilgrim on his way to visit his girl friend he'd met online. I had my hopes up, but I didn't want to be over confident. Especially when I saw that the package contained not only the male Pilgrim, but costumes for an elf and a reindeer. While the Pilgrim male was going to be a challenge working with thread on the tight areas of the reindeer and the elf's boots were an even greater challenge for someone with my thread issues.

I don't think there are words to express just how thankful I am. Seeing their little faces as I work just makes me smile and yes, laugh. They just have a way of making me feel better. So thank you Christmas Elf for bringing some early Christmas cheer.

Itty Bitty Pilgrim Girl

I have been fascinated with the 5" Lots to Love dolls for a while. However, until I learned to work with thread, there was not much hope that I could do much with them. Once I found thread hooks I could use, I knew which projects I wanted to tackle first, The Holiday Itty Bitties by Sheila Leslie. While I have lots of commitments for gifts and charity, I couldn't resist stopping to make a set for my own Thanksgiving decorations. I was sorry to see this was book is out of print. I am sure those who are interested can still find it in the second hand market.

I got the majority of the outfit finished a while back and then just had the snap and the threads to weave in. I was in a finishing mode last weekend and got this one done.

What I found interesting as I moved the dress from my model doll to the display doll is that these dolls aren't just different in features, the body types seem to be just a little different, too. The bloomers and the dress fit just a little differently on the finished doll than they did on the model doll. While no two dolls are ever exactly the same, these two dolls had real differences in shape that I had not expected.

I am looking forward to tackling the Pilgrim boy soon. I hope to have both ready for my Thanksgiving decorations.

Turkey Pilgrim Srubbie Pattern Recieved as Gift

The Fairy Godmothers are busy over at Crochetville with the Summer wishlists. I was gifted the Turkey Pilgrim Scrubbie Pattern. Thank you Fairy Godmother for your thoughtfulness.

I plan on making several of these to send out for the holiday season after I make one for myself. These will make practical and cute holiday decorations.

Turkey Finger Puppet

This is the final in my set of finger puppets for Thanksgiving unless I find some new patterns or end up needing to make more. This turkey also comes from Almost Unschoolers. While these are being mailed, I love having child friendly toys and decorations when we are having children over for the holidays or we are visiting others with kids. Holiday toys can always be packed away with the decorations and bring back fond memories when the toys come out again the next year.

I altered this pattern slightly by making the finger slightly larger and using plastic saftey eyes since the head ended up separated from the rest of the puppet. The body is made with Red Heart Super Saver and the details were made from scraps of Caron One Pound.

Thanksgiving Lovey

After the success with the Halloween Lovey, I decided to adapt the pattern from September/October 2011 Crochet Today to make a Thanksgiving version.

I could not find colors I liked in cotton so I used up Red Heart Super Saver, Bernat Super Value, Caron One Pounder, and some unidentified scraps I picked up at Church sales.

The Pilgrim hat and turkey patterns are free Ken doll patterns, the links for them are located on the Thanksgiving page. I have a variety of options for my Christmas Lovey. I am not sure what patterns I will use for the objects. I have Christmas cotton so that should not be an issue.

Mrs. Pilgrim Bear

I feel like I have been talking about this poor bear forever. I finished her body and then it took forever to get back to her head as I wandered off to work on other Thanksgiving projects. However, I do love her and want a set for myself before next Thanksgiving.

This bear was created using Annie's Attic Crochet Pilgrim Bears, 8B040. The original pattern is slightly different with more details as I mentioned in my blog about Mr. Pilgrim Bear. However, for those who are interested the pattern is still widely available on the vintage market. Along with making a set for myself, I have a few others to make before the pattern will be retired I am sure.

The bears shipped out last Tuesday and should have arrived either last Friday, or Monday. I hope their journey was a safe one. Since I try to post my blogs in advance, it is not always easy to keep time in perspective. I know during Thanksgiving week my time to update is limited.

Pilgrim Bear

This is the first of the Pilgrim Bears I have been talking about in previous blogs. The pattern is Annie's Attic Crochet Pilgrim Bears, 8B040. I see this offered often at vintage pattern sites and even eBay if anyone is interested. The Annie's pattern has far more detailed faces, but I liked the simpler look.

I learned so much making this bear. The pattern was easy to follow and I was amazed that the bear stood even before I added the cardboard to reinforce the shoes. I am currently working to adapt this style to a smaller version of a doll pattern to see if I can get the dolls to stand, too.

I did decrease the size of the bear by using a significantly smaller hook than the pattern called for as space is an issue where this guy will be traveling. I would not necessarily want him to be much larger when I make one for myself. He fits nicely on the piano.

The female Pilgrim is close to completion. As usual, I got distracted working on several other projects, but she should be ready for photographs soon. I have to get these packages ready to mail so they will arrive on time.

Barbie Pilgrim Outfit

I love sending little packages to celebrate the smaller holidays to the nieces and nephews. It can be challenging to find cute, affordable, fun items. I was excited to find this Pilgrim outfit in the Timeless Fashion Doll Wardrobe, Vol. 1, #495 from Shady Lane. This is a current pattern still available at
Shady Lane. I now only have two more to make before Thanksgiving.




The pattern calls for sports weight yarn, but I think I will try a different brand the next time I attempt this pattern. This was a little heavier than I would have preferred, although I liked the darker color. The shawl pattern worked out nicely and I plan to use that pattern for other doll outfits as well.

After finishing this blog I found free patterns for Barbie and Ken Pilgrim outifts. I still have not mastered crocheting over elastic, but these may be of interest to those who can handle that crocheting skill. Check out the Thanksgiving blog page for those free patterns.
