Knit Picks Fingering Yarn

Just a quick note of business, I have not received compensation for this review. I am just thrilled to have found a source of fingering yarn that is not in baby colors. At first, I was even excited to find the baby fingering yarn. If you have followed this blog, you know my journey to find the lightweight yarn for my doll clothes. I have not been able to find a regular local source for fingering yarn. Posts to various sites had not proved helpful. I guess most people use thread or sport weight for their projects or they are just holding out on their sources for fingering yarn. I can occasionally find Paton's and Bernat Baby Fingering yarn at local JoAnn's and AC Moore's but neither carries the products with any predictability. I had taken to ordering my baby fingering yarn online when JoAnn's had it on sale. I was disappointed to find Knitting Warehouse had little to offer in price difference or selection. When I find something I have spent time looking for, I share it with others who might also not know where to look.

Mom came through when she referred me to Knit Picks. She has been knitting the small outfits and was ahead of me in locating a source. I was a bit intimidated with the yarn selection process. I am a simple yarn buyer. I just want basic simple yarn that will make doll clothes and toys. While I understand the benefits of more expensive yarns for other projects, there is little value added in buying the more expensive yarns for my projects. It means I can make fewer projects.

I can now move beyond pastel colors. I found some beautiful primary colors and blends that I cannot wait to try. Barbie and Barbie's dressers will also be pleased to move beyond the basic pinks, blues, yellows, and pale purples of baby yarn as well.

What was most pleasing was the cost. I found Palette Yarn 50g balls are priced from $1.99-$2.19 a skein. The baby skeins are no larger and that is less than I pay for them on sale. They are also acrylic, not wool. Knit Picks also offers free shipping if you order more than $50. Not surprising I had no trouble meeting that requirement. Stay tuned, I will be discussing my experience with this yarn soon and hopefully have some projects to show.

Barbie St. Patrick's Day Dress

I have been working on adapting Skipper and Barbie patterns to fit each other. This is the Sun Dress pattern from Annie's Attic Fashion Doll Little Sister, pattern book number 87D22. When I looked at the finished Skipper pattern, it seemed like it would make an interesting St. Patrick's Day outfit. I still want to do some work on making the bodice fit better. However, I am pleased with my first effort.

This adaptation started with a four-inch elastic circle. I looked at similar patterns to see what the starting chains were and began the pattern using the same number of stitches. Then I followed the pattern for the Skipper skirt.

My next project is an Easter outfit for the American Girl Doll. I finished the top, skirt yesterday, and am working on the arms and details. I have not decided on a St. Patrick’s Day pattern for the American Girl Doll yet.

Skipper Sun Dress

Skipper's Sun Dress was another pattern from Annie's Attic Fashion Doll Little Sister, pattern book number 87D22. This is my favorite of Skipper's dresses so far. I love the way the skirt hangs and I learned some new techniques for constructing a dress. I pulled the skirt out several times before finishing the outfit, but I now understand how it is made and I am thinking of trying a Barbie dress using the same pattern and just adding more stitches. While the party dress used fingering yarn, this dress was made using sports yarn, a cheaper alternative considering the amount of outfits I have been making.

I am working hard to finish my Valentine's package that needed to be mailed, yesterday. I have one bear almost finished. One part of the bear is not cooperating. I am trying to make a second one, but do not know if there will be time. I still have one finger puppet to go and then the package has to be mailed, as is or it will be there by St. Patrick's Day.

Skipper Party Dress

This picture does not quite do the dress justice. It is much fuller and prettier in person. This is another dress I adapted from Annie's Attic Fashion Doll Little Sister, Pattern Number 87D22 published 1986. This pattern used fingering yarn and it was so much fun working on the skirt. The formation of the skirt creates the illusion of an underskirt. The pattern creates the style with layers of crochet skirt instead of an actual underskirt. This was a new style of skirt pattern for me. I am anxious to make a few in different colors. The top of the dress has been simplified. I also added an elastic waist as I explained in previous blog posts. I also experimented with using buttons instead of snaps for closures in the back this time.

It has been fun experimenting with the Skipper patterns. With these patterns, I hope to be able to adapt them and make more styles for the doll. I have not found many free Skipper patterns so being able to adapt the few vintage books that are available is an advantage. For those that are interested, I have been using a three- inch elastic for her waist and crocheting over the waist band before working on the skirt and then the top. Barbie's outfits have used a four-inch elastic sewed together and then crocheted over for her outfits.

Skipper Skating Outfit

I bought three sets of the camping Skipper and Kelly/Stacie dolls on clearance. Mom and I needed the dolls for models to make clothes and the other two sets will be used for a combination of Easter and birthday presents. I had a Kelly doll from a Church sale that I experimented with making clothes for prior to Christmas and sent one outfit off with my Christmas box. However, I promised myself I would not open the box with Skipper until after Christmas.

Sure enough Christmas afternoon I was opening Skipper's box and pulling out an Annie's Attic vintage book I had purchased to start this outfit. I have not found many free patterns for Skipper. You can see what I have located on the Kelly/Skipper page, the link available underneath. I have found a couple of Annie's Attic Crochet Little Sister books. This pattern comes from Fashion Doll Little Sister, Pattern Number 87D22 published 1986. This book uses primarily sports yarn, which if you follow my blog you know is important to me. The second one I purchased was Fashion Doll Sister and Me, 87D21, also published 1986. This one unfortunately is crochet thread. I am hoping I can convert some of the patterns to Lustersheen because I am hopeless with thread. I have seen both these available on vintage pattern sites and auction sites if you are looking for them.

I am confused if this is supposed to be a rollerskating or ice skating outfit. The pattern shows a picture with old fashioned laced roller skates, but also has it in the winter patterns. I guess the child with the doll gets to choose what she will do when wearing the outfit.

While there are not many free patterns available for Skipper, I am hoping I can use what I am learning from the published patterns and my experience with Barbie to make a variety of other Skipper items once I finish the first book that uses sports yarn. For instance knowing the waist on the skirt and the party dress, I can play with other Barbie patterns to try to adapt them to Skipper sizes.

Barbie Family Holiday Photo

I wanted a picture of Barbie, Ken, and Kelly together. Next year I am going to have to figure out patterns for Stacie and Skipper, but thankfully those dolls have yet to be received so no Santa's are required.

I have always loved the movie White Christmas. When I was working on these outfits over Thanksgiving I received the highest compliments when someone compared the look to my favorite Christmas movie.

I still have another American Girl Doll Barbie Santa to make before Christmas Eve. However, I am thrilled with what I have accomplished so far. I could never have done any of this last Christmas.

Kelly Santa Crochet

One of the Christmas presents I am sending out this year is a Barbie/Kelly set so I wanted to make sure Kelly also had a Christmas outfit. In my travels, I have not encountered a Kelly Santa outfit. I have no experience with Kelly at all. I only recently acquired a few Kelly dolls to use as models. I ordered a Kelly/Stacie pack on clearance and then found Kelly and Tommie at a Church sale.

I started by playing with a Cupie doll pattern. The Cupie doll is not in any way proportional to Kelly. However, it gave me some general ideas about working with smaller sized dolls. My next goal is to work on some free Kelly patterns I have downloaded to get a better feel for how to work with Kelly to make her outfits fit. However, I do think this is a cute first start.

Thankfully, there is only one family member with a Kelly doll so I do not have to try to repeat this creation as it was done on the fly with no guarantees I could successfully repeat it. The Cupie pattern started at the neck so I did also. It actually created the armholes in the opposite direction, neck down, not bottom up, that I am used to, but it worked. I single crocheted the top area, but double crocheted the gown. I tried adding arms, but the sports yarn was just too thick. Perhaps when I try an established pattern I will understand how others have accomplished that task.

The hat ended up larger than I wanted to accommodate her hair. She has a rather hard fixed ponytail that forced the hat to be wider than I wanted for such a small face.

I am looking forward to making more Kelly outfits. I have Skipper and Stacie to work on after the holidays are over. I have some vintage Annie's Attic patterns for Skipper and I think some of them are also for Stacie as well. I have to check her measurements to see what fits. However, those I do not need until Easter/May period. As much as I am tempted to pull them out, they need to remain boxed until after the holiday rush.

Barbie Fashion Doll Shortalls

This shortalls project started as an attempt to make the Annie's Fashion Doll Crochet Club out of print Overalls Outfit pattern, FC35-03. I have been trying to adapt thread patterns to 1-2 weight yarns that are easier for me to work with. Unfortunatly, I lacked a small enough hook and decided to proceed forward with the experiment anyways.

The upside is one of the kids I make Barbie clothes for now has an original pair of shortalls that I have not seen a pattern for in other venues. The downside is I need to rework my attempts to adapt the pattern for the overalls. I did manage to acquire the hooks I was looking for so I am sure I will take another shot at this project before Christmas.

Barbie Christmas Sweater Knit

This was another one of Mom's contributions. She knitted this sweater for a relative on my husband's side of the family and I now have it put aside for Christmas. For those interested in the pattern it comes from Nicky Epstein's Knits for Barbie Doll which I believe has recently gone out of print. Check your local library as I borrowed it prior to purchasing for Mom.

I crocheted the pants. The pattern came from a 1986 Annie's Pattern Club book, Fashion Doll Quick and Easy. Joyce Bishop was the designer.

Barbie Crochet and Sewing Free Patterns

Playing with Barbie is a tradition that spans generations. Outfitting Barbie continues to be a challenge met by parents, grandparents, and friends of children who are creative with craft making. Finding free patterns can lessen the expense, so I have been working on collecting Barbie patterns to help crafters use their skills with free patterns. Update: Using Wayback I was able to recover some of the pattern links from the Barbie Boutique site, not all. It does not look as if the pictures are with the patterns. I do hope this library ends up somewhere as there are so many wonderful patterns it is a shame to see them disappear.

The Barbie Boutique Links have gone dead. I noticed them as of February 22, 2012 and am removing them. I am sad to see them go as I have found them to be wonderful not only for Barbie and her family, but as basics for other projects as well. If I find them relisted I will post the links again. Just another reminder to download the patterns that you may want for future reference.
