St. Patick's Day Ornaments Part 2

This is the last set of St. Patrick's day ornaments for my friend's business but I'm hoping to get some Easter ones made. Perhaps some bunnies and eggs. Sloth's are a particular favorite animal which is why I adapted a Halloween pattern I had into a St. Patrick's ornament. You can purchase the Halloween pattern here.

I generally prefer ami's with round heads, especially when you want to add things like hats but I had this pattern with a flat head, it was already fairly small so taking it to ornament size didn't disort the pattern so I decided to go with it rather than finding something new. Sloths were a must for this project.

This is made with Sinfonia Cotton yarn I picked up at Creative Yarn source when I was making lots of Ami's a while back. It was a great choice for this project. At some point I'd like to find a rounder Sloth for a different kind of project but this was well received and didn't actually make it to the tree.

Recently someone was kind enough to share a box of old crochet patterns that had been gifted to them. I chose this one because of the multiple holiday themed items included which I thought would make cute ornaments. For those of you interested the leaflet is from Annie's Attic Crochet Backpack Buddies 872853 by Michelle Wilcox. She has long been a favorite designer. There are some great ideas here for future tree decorations.

The original Halloween sloth pattern had a pumpkin between his legs. In order to make it work I really needed to replace the pumpkin with another item and the pot of gold seemed like a great idea. I wasn't as happy with the Orble pattern I used previously so after searching I settled on this free pattern you can find here.

Why the extra pot ornament you may ask? Well this is what happens when you mix and match patterns reducing to fit a tree ornament. I thought I reduced enough but I ended up needing to make the pot in thread to make it fit the sloth. Now I had another pot of gold for the tree. Hopefully it fosters luck on the business.

Lil Cutesies Irish Dress

When possible I try to make different outfits for the Lil Cutesies holiday outfits to send off in the holiday packages. The first one was based Amy Carrico Crochet World Bonus pattern. This outfit uses the hat and shoes from that pattern but the dress is based on the Lots to Love 8 inch Valentine dress I made from Annie Potter's Holiday Babies available for purchase here.

The dress and hat are made with worsted yarn. All the white yarn and the green for the shoes are Red Heart sport yarn.

Lots to Love 8 Inch Irish Lass

A friend of mine from Crochetville mentioned adapting 5" patterns for the 8" dolls a while back but I hadn't gotten around to trying it until recently when I was looking for a St. Patrick's Day doll outfit for my 8" Holiday doll project. I normally wait to make these dolls until I've sent out my holiday box but after packing up my Valentine decorations I really missed seeing the dolls so I decided I'd fit one in between my other projects.

Crochet World used to have Web Bonus pattern offerings from 2008-2012 and they are still available online. Amy Carrico's 5" Irish Lass Pattern can be found free here.

Since this pattern was designed for a 5" doll adaptations had to be made to make it fit the larger 8" doll. I started with worsted weight 4 yarn for the top with a D hook. The sport yarn might have worked but I've found this doll to be large at the top and the sport yarn often makes the top too small. The down side is the dress is always bulkier with the larger yarn. Do to the sizing differences I had to add two rows before the arm holes row 3 to make the top long enough that the arm holes were correctly placed.

As I moved on to the skirt it quickly became clear the skirt lost all shaping and was enormous with the worsted weight 4 green yarn. I still have a crate full of the old Red Heart Sport yarn that I'm working through and when I checked I had a skein of Paddy Green that just seemed like it had been waiting for this project. I continued on with the Red Heart Sport and a D hook.

For the underskirt, which is really a trim not a true underskirt I used white sport yarn which I'm thinking is Mary Maxim Baby yarn I bought a while back but has since lost its label. It feels like it is somewhere in the sport to DK range. I added an extra row of dc around no increases to the pattern. In the picture you can see the underskirt showing. With one row with the alterations to the pattern I found it was tucked under the green shamrocks.

I tried three different hook sizes before going back to the D hook with the sport yarn for the panties. The D hook was the right call but I was concerned they would be too large. Anything bigger and they were much too large with this brand of sport yarn. You can't tell from this picture but this pattern has ruffles on the back of the panties and those were done with the green sport yarn. I'd never crocheted anything like that so I wasn't quite clear which way the ruffles were supposed to go but I think I got it right.

I LOVE thes shoes so much that I had to take a picture so I'd remember what I did when I pack the St. Patrick's decoratiosn away and I want to make them for the donation doll outfits. These are actually fairly simple to make. I continued with the sport yarn but found the D hook was way too large. This doll has the tippy toe feet and it is one of the more challenging of the 8" dolls to fit. When you buy them online you don't get to choose the dolls you get what they send or I'd try for the dolls with more of a standing foot. Getting back to my notes to make these shoes fit the 8" doll I needed to use a B hook with the sport weight yarn. I also played a little with the placement of the straps but I'm happy overall with the outcome.

Last note to myself the shamrock buttons came from Factory Direct. I mention this because I know I'll end up wanting more of these for another project and won't remember who had them.

Leprechaun

I've written about Pam's Patterns Little people patterns before. They cover a wide range of holiday themes, some of which have limited pattern options. They work up up quickly and are adaptable. I've made them in worsted weight and sport cotton depending on what yarn I had on hand. You can purchase the pattern here.

The pattern suggests using an H hook, I use a D as I amd sticking with the theme of "Little People" and wanted mine to be more of a village size than larger ami's.

I thinking I'm making decent progress on this box but I need to finish it so I can begin work on the Easter box which will need to be hopping off before I know it.

St. Patrick's Day Cupcake

I know it isn't even Valentine's Day and I am already posting about St. Patrick's Day?? Well the reality is that if you are going to make stuff and mail it you have to start well before the holiday in question. COVID has only made the mailing situation more challenging so getting these projects finished and ready to be mailed is even more essential.

I was quite surprised to find this pattern in Kawaii Crochetas St. Patrick's Day patterns aren't all that common. This is a color themed book and I guess green was a good time to introduce a St. Patrick's Day themed item.

This pattern is designed for lighter yarn but my stock of light green cotton yarn in multiple shades was limited so I went with acrylic worsted weight yarn and I wasn't disappointed with the outcome. I used an e hook for this project.

I hope to finish a couple more St. Patrick's themed items and a few more breakfast items and then have this package on its way so it hopefully arrives before the holiday.

While the celebration will be muted this year I still enjoyed making holiday projects this year.

Celtic Knot Dishcloth

Holiday dishcloths, hot pads, and pot holders are favorite projects of mine. I love having them to put out to decorate and use in my kitchen. I came across this free Celtic Knot pattern while looking for St. Patrick's Day patterns. You can find the pattern here.

The most challenging part of this pattern is not letting the rings twist as you join the 4th ring. When I make this again I'd use pins to mark the required joining points on the rings prior to attempting to join them all together.

I saw another weaved styled hot pad pattern recently that I'd like to get to at some point. It was a fun project.

Leprechaun Baby Doll

In January I kind of got in the mood to make holiday outfits to send out as part of my holiday packages. If you read the blog you know I sent a Big Sister baby doll out to a family member when she was getting a baby sister and I've been crocheting holiday outfits ever since as part of the holiday packages I've been mailing out since she was a baby.

Making baby doll outfits can be challenging because as I've mentioned in previous posts you rarely are using patterns designed for the doll you are working to cloth. It generally requires you to adapt patterns from different kinds of dolls to get what you want. This project was a meld of several patterns.

The first pattern you may recognize if you read some of the holiday posts. The dress was adapted from the Santa Baby pattern which can be purchased on Etsy here. For my own notes I went down to a E hook size this time. I might consider sport yarn if I had it on hand for another try. It still is a bit bulky. Perhaps a lighter worsted? That being said this was another great stash busting project. I was able to use up yarn left off on some bobbins from an afghan project. Everything used on this project came from my stash. It feels good to be using up yarn and not needing to purchase yarn to complete a project.

The hat comes from a book I bought for the 18 Inch Dolls Amigurumi Holiday Hats for 18-Inch Dolls I reduced the hook to a G and the hat fit fine. I generally find I have to increase the suggested H hook size to get the hats to fit the 18 inch dolls which is why I only went down one hook size.

The shoes have become one of got to baby doll patterns. It is part of the free pattern Peach Keen found here. These work up quickly and best of all I find they stay on pretty well, which is one of the bigger challenges with making baby doll shoes. The first is getting them to fit because unlike the 18 inch dolls that have flat feet baby doll feet tend to have curled toes or other odd shaping which can make them tough to fit. This then adds to the general problem of making doll shoes in general, keeping them on the doll feet.

In the past I've tended not to make baby doll shoes but recently I've been pushing myself to add them as it makes a more finished look to the outfits.

St. Patrick's Day Baby Hat

I've been branching out this year and trying some new projects. I've made doll hats, but never a baby hat. The Bibs & Bonnets leaflet that I got the pattern for the Shamrock bib also had a hat. Since I'd not made one before it seemed worth a try. One of the challenges of working with out of print patterns is the yarn used in the original pattern is often been discontinued. Even when you have a gauge there is no guarantee you have have the right yarn. You kind of have to play with it a bit to make it work. My first attempt will end up being donated as a doll's hat once I make a dress to go with it. As I said making gauge does not ensure a good match for the project.

Once I understood the directions for the brim, the second hat worked up easier.

Pattern notes:

I used Knit Picks Brava Dublin and Peapod yarn for the hat. The hat pattern had a shamrock decoration for the hat, but it was kind of thick and heavy so I decided to use the shamrock pattern from the bookmark I made previously. You can find the pattern here.

I am no fan of sewing so instead of crocheting the light green insert and sewing it in, I used the open row of stitches from row 11 and did a row of dc and then a row of sc to provide the hat band. It didn't provide the texture of the original pattern, but it was much easier than the prescribed pattern directions.

Shamrock Bib

I was looking for something cute to add to my St. Patrick's Day Holiday box and I came across an out of print House of White Birches leaflet Bibs & Bonnets leaflet. The leaflet includes hats and bibs for Halloween, Thanksgiving, First Birthday, Santa, July Fourth, St. Patrick's Day, Easter, and Sunday Best.

Charts are always a challenge for me, but I have been working on improving my skills this year and challenging myself to take baby steps outside my comfort zone. This was a good project for that as the chart was small and thus not too challenging to work. The tough part was finding coordinating colors because my search for soft cotton didn't find two greens, so I ended up with using knit picks cotton and acrylic and the transitions weren't all I'd hoped for, but I still think I came out with a cute product.

Hello Kitty Free St. Patrick's Day Pattern

This is a free pattern I located last year and saved on my St. Patrick's Day page. I purchased a package of these hats from Michaels last year and stored them. For those of you looking to make this pattern I do not know if Michaels is still carrying these hats. I am hoping to get out before the season is over and stock up again. Last year I used some of them for Barbie hats. They make cute additions to various decorations. I have some ideas about using them for other patterns next year.

St. Patrick's Day Projects

With more time than I had previously thought, I am working on some home projects for St. Patrick's Day. I posted earlier about a Granny Square Shamrock Dishcloth. Now I almost have one crocheted in the shape of a Shamrock finished. It is fun having your own hand made decorations to put up. Perhaps I will even finish some Easter ones this year.

The second Hello Kitty is just about completed and ready for her photograph. This one looks completely different from the first. I have to check on a Barbie pattern I downloaded, as I believe I am missing a page. I started reading it yesterday and it looks like half a pattern. I am going to have to go back and check it out. That set me back as I was ready to get that started.

I still have some bears to make. This will be a busy crocheting season.

St. Patrick's Day Hello Kitty

I decided to try a new Kitty pattern and settled on the pattern from Super-Cute Crochet: Over 35 Adorable Animals and Friends to Make. This pattern had some interesting differences. Like the bunny I discussed earlier, the front of the head is what I normally use as the bottom. It creates an interesting pattern. Next time I would stuff the head a bit fuller. The Kitty pattern does come with a dress pattern, but I ended up altering it, as it did not fit the animal I created. The ears will also be altered on my next effort. I followed the pattern as written for them, but next time will play with them to get them shaped better.

The hat comes from the American School of Needlework's Crochet Pairs of Bears pattern number 1182. As I expected, that book will prove to be very useful on many projects, not just the bears.

I am working on St. Patrick's Day and Easter projects hoping to finish them in time.
