Baby Doll Diapers

I like adding fun details to the doll donation. Baby doll diapers are always a cute extra. This is a simple free pattern I was able to retrieve using the Wayback machine here. I suggest if you have the remotest interest in this pattern that you print a copy as these links often only last for a limited time.

This is a wonderful pattern. It is simple but effective. It has worked for every baby doll I've used from the 12 inch to the 16 inch dolls I use now primarily by adjusting the hook size. For me I use an I hook with worsted weight yarn for the 16 inch doll. I also use snaps rather than buttons. I tried the buttons, but I found them hard to manipulate. The snaps seemed easier for little hands.

Another challenge I met this year that you can see from the picture is I completed 4 diapers, 2 for each doll. The doll can wear one and the child has a diaper to "change" the doll with in the diaper bag which I will eventually have to make. That was on my list of projects to complete last year and I only managed one diaper per doll.

I've been asked why off white for the diapers. I was gifted quite a bit of off white and I've been trying to finish it up. It fits with my yarn diet as I'm a bit low on solid white at the moment.

15 Inch Doll Soft Bodied Mary Maxim Baby Doll Sundress

I decided to try adding the soft bodied 15 inch Mary Maxim dolls to my donation this year. They seem to be a little larger in the upper body than most of the patterns I've looked at that fit the hard bodied Mary Maxim dolls much better. I'm going to adapt because I think the soft dolls are a bit nicer for the children who will be playing with them after Christmas next year. While I've found that most of the 18 Inch dolls are close in size, the baby doll sizes really do range from one doll to the next. While I always try on the outfits as I'm working, I find with the baby dolls, it's even more important, because there isn't often a common understanding of size when one reads a pattern for a baby doll as there is when you read one for an 18 inch doll. The sizes even among the 12 or 15 inch sizes are pretty wide.

I am always so grateful for those who are generous and donate their patterns for free. I found this baby doll pattern on Hooks and Knives Blogspot here. It was designed for the smaller Fisher Price Little Mommy Doll, but I increased my hook size to a K and it fit. The blog used to have a picture of the doll and the outfit, but it looks like it was removed. Edited the blog has been taken down but I changed the link to allow you to see the pattern for a time.

Other than changing the hook size to make the pattern fit, I also decided I didn't want to sew the back up and since it was going to be a slip on, I crocheted the dress in the round from the first row and have no problems getting it on and off the doll. I tried the suggested H hook for the first row and it didn't fit the hard bodied 15 inch doll so I'm thinking I will still need to play with the hook size to get it to fit the hard bodied 15 inch doll.

This dress works up really quickly and it is a cute outfit. I added a scalloped border to the bottom, but even without it is a nice outfit which adapts easily to the many sizes of baby dolls on the market.

This was a wonderful and busy summer. I finished some crochet projects, but spent lots of time with family, too. What I didn't do, was blog.

As fall approaches, my annual Christmas donation deadline looms. I looked in the bags I have my finished projects stored in and was relieved to discover I had forgotten how much I finished last winter and spring. I still have a long way to go if I want to get everything I planned ready for that early December deadline.

One of the things I did this year when Mary Maxim had their 40% off coupons was stock up on some of their doll projects. At full price, I have trouble justifying the cost of the kit and shipping. However, when I can get a discount, there many levels of savings. I have trouble getting the sports weight and lighter yarns locally, so even if I'd bought the pattern digitally and avoided paying shipping, I'd still likely have had to had the correct weight of yarn shipped in order to finish the project.

I posted about one of the 18" doll kits I finished a while back. This is the first of the 15" baby doll kits I have been working on. I played a little with the gauge on this, but I suggest you make a swatch before starting. The second kit I just started seems to match the gauge without any adjustments, but it is also a different brand of yarn. I often find myself adjusting hooks depending on the pattern, so I don't suggest my experience is typical.

I did opt out of making the flowers do to time constraints. I also chose to make this a summer dress as I am making several other outfits with longer sleeves. One other note, which those that read things closely will catch, the blanket makes a 12" blanket, which is not large enough to cover the doll. I made one and when I realized the size issue, used it for my other smaller donation baby doll. I extended the pattern to make it large enough to cover the doll. As I said those who read closely will catch this, but I missed it.

Baby Doll Crochet Hooded Towel

Of course after taking a bath Baby Jenna Doll needed a towel. Since the hooded towels are all the rage, why not a crocheted hooded towel for the set. After all, after a bath, baby needs a nice comfy towel to dry off and get warm. This is also part of Maggie’s Crochet baby bath doll pattern set available here.

This project is turning into a great stash busting project. I have been digging into my stash and able to use up some partial skeins that were left over from previous projects. This set has not required any additional yarn purchases.

Baby Doll Pajamas

I started out making the PJ's from Maggie Crochet's baby bath doll pattern set available here for the Baby Jenna Doll. I ran into a couple of problems. This has been a stash busting project and I finally ran out of dark pink. Therefore, I had to work around the situation and replace the dark with light pink. I ended up redesigning the top to accommodate the color changes.

As for the pants, I have never been great with patterns that require you to crochet two pieces and sew them together. I have two issues. First, the two pieces have to be the same. They were close as I worked on this. The second issue I have is the problem I always had with sewing; attach part A to part D. Somehow, my part A and D never seemed to make a good match. This was no different, so I decided to go with a basic in the round pant design for the PJ bottoms. Simple, but it worked and the pants are easy to get on and off.

My favorite part of this pattern was the shoes. They worked up quickly and fit perfectly. I rarely have that kind of luck when making doll shoes and do to the size and shape of the doll feet I did not have high expectations.

Baby Doll Bath Set

I decided to add baby dolls to my donation this year. The timing worked out that I was able to pick up two Melissa & Doug Jenna - 12" Dolls on after Christmas clearance. I had purchased this doll bath pattern set a while back and never got to making any of the items. It is available at Maggie's Crochet here. As I started thinking about my doll projects for the coming year, I liked the idea of a crocheted bath set. Accessories always make dolls more fun to play with and this set has those.

One of the exciting discoveries for me is that I can crochet with thread using Susan Bates Bamboo Steelite Size 7 and size 10 thread. I am in the early stages yet, but I found that with the larger handle I was able to make the soap in thread after making a larger one using sports yarn. Since I am also planning a 15" doll donation, I will use the larger items for that doll. I am quite excited about this step. I used a Christmas gift card from Joann’s to get the thread to try out a doll thread pattern that I have wanted to make for some time, but never thought it would be possible. Only time will tell. It is a long way from a soap bar to a doll's dress, but it is a start. I have been so certain I would never get to do any thread projects that I am delighted to have found a tool that works for me.
