Crochet Cupcakes

I love toys that encourage creative play. So when ever possible I try to include items in the holiday packages that encourage kids to pretend, act out stories, etc. Play food has long been a favorite present. I've started adding play food to some of the packages. Last month it was Valentine cookies and candy. This month I crocheted green cupcakes to keep with the St. Patrick's Day theme.

Cupcakes are not a crochet project I have much experience with so I decided to try two different patterns to learn a little about making them.

Notes for myself:
I reduced the total number of stitches for the cupcake from 36 to 30 because it fit better in the cupcake sleeve. I found it was tight when I did the full 36. I also reduced the total number of rows because I wanted it to sit on top of the cupcake sleeve. When I made the full number of rows it stuck out. I kept measuring it against the side of the sleeve to make sure it would fit.

The second free pattern can be found here. While not as obvious this cupcake is also made with a separate cupcake and cover. I learned about surface crochet for this project and I like the stitch.

Crochet Soup

I have not seen an actual pattern for soup although I have seen bowls, cereal, and even dip. Soup seemed like a great addition to my kitchen and fake food Christmas project so I thought about adapting a pattern to create my own soup. I looked at the cereal patterns but the bowls were large. In fact, I am considering using the soup approach for a small cereal option. Storage is an issue. This pattern is actually the dip pattern from Yummi 'Gurumi: Over 60 Gourmet Crochet Treats to Make.

This was an easy pattern to follow and I just changed the white dip to light brown for soup broth and added colored yarn for veggies. The pattern has a double bowl, which was interesting to work with and created a more solid structure. Some of the cereal bowls I looked at were single bowls and I think I would add the double option to make them more solid.

Crochet Chocolate Chip Cookies

I promised I would make some cookies to go on that cookie sheet and I have begun the task. The pattern comes from Amigurumi Two!: Crocheted Toys for Me and You and Baby Too.

As you are working on projects, you learn a few things. The first cookie almost looks like a sugar cookie or an oatmeal cookie because I tried using up some old brown yarn I had. The brown was too light to make effective chocolate chips. Unfortunately, I did not notice in the light I was working in until I had already assembled the cookie. When I realized it, I dug out some darker brown I had bought for another project when I made the second cookie.



I have many more cookies to make with darker chips so I am sure this one odd cookie will be fine. Who knows perhaps it will start a new cookie trend.

Crochet Frying Pan

Those who have been reading this blog know I have been working on creating crochet food and kitchen items for Christmas. This has been a fun and challenging project. Even my husband has gotten involved cutting cardboard to make the pieces that require more support. While some pieces have been more successful than others, the frying pan ranks in the success column.




This pattern comes from Annie's Attic's It's Play Time. I found the crochet directions to make the parts of the pan to be very straight forward and easy to follow. However, the assembly directions left much to be desired. This was one of those patterns that says, now sew it together. The one hint it did give was that you should single crochet the cardboard and the circle used to cover the cardboard to the bottom of the pan creating a hole to slide the crochet covered ruler into the opening creating a pan handle. My instinct would have been to put the carboard in the bottom of the pan and sew it down. However that would have created a problem in adding the handle. I also had to work out my wrong side/right side issues with which side should be showing. Now a more experienced or even intelligent crocheter may not have had these struggles. I have only been at this for a little over a year.




When I finally had it all together and started taking pictures it was worth the several times I pulled the bottom off and started over. This is a cute toy and one that will function as well as its plastic alternatives. I am pleased that this works as a pretend cooking option. It is hard to know with crochet toys if there will be enough support as I discovered making the spatula. I have design improvements for a non-slotted spatula option I plan to make before Christmas that I will post if I finish.

Crochet Cookie Sheet

Crochet food is fun, but kids also need the kitchen items to put the food on. This cookie sheet comes from Annie's Attic's It's Play Time . I mentioned in a previous post that I am working on the frying pan from the book. The crochet work is all done. I am hunting for the appropriate sized cardboard that provide the support for the bottom of the pan. We always seem to recycle prior to these projects.

The cookie sheet was a fun project and used up the last of my available cardboard. My husband was kind enough to cut a piece to fit the pattern requirements. He is much better at making things straight keeping the corners square than I am.

I thought perhaps I might have crocheted some cookies by the time I was ready to post this pattern, but I have been busy working on Halloween projects. I finally finished the eight ghosts I need to have finished for this fall. I have half the number of pumpkins done. When I get to making some cookies I post a picture of the cookies with the pan before I ship it for Christmas.
