Three Little Pigs Finger Puppets

The Three Little Pigs was my literary theme for that summer bday I keep writing about. I'd made these finger puppets before and they had been a hit so I decided to try them out again. This time I added a bag as I've learned small things get lost easily.

I've been making this pattern for several years and sadly, it no longer appears to be available for purchase. You can find the listing on Ravelry here. I give you that information so you can contact the designer and find out if she'd be willing to sell the pattern again.

Jungle Project Finished

I finished the jungle project that all started with the free Joann's pattern found here. I had to get this wrapped and mailed quickly to reach my deadline. My Mom is sending a few knitted zoo keepers along with some additional animals to add to the project.

My Mom and I are hoping to collaborate on a farm project for Christmas.

Jungle Play Mat

I love belonging to online crochet groups because they provide great support and leads. Recently a woman posted a request for help in finding a free pattern for a jungle set offered by Joann. I was intrigued, as I love toy sets. Someone kindly posted the link and I downloaded the pattern. I found the pattern here.

I altered the pattern slightly. I wanted a larger road so I changed the road. I love this pattern because it could easily be adapted to other themes. The first link includes the free pattern for the mat, huts, trees, rowboat, and a jeep. You have to go further into the site to find the animals. Some of the animals are knitted and some crocheted. I have been adding to the animals using some free patterns and using A Zoo For You (Leisure Arts #5152) that I bought a while back and had not had the chance to use.

I will be posting more pictures of the project. I have most of it completed. I am currently working on the hut. I still have to make the trees and hopefully a few more animals. This present is for a June birthday so I still have time. Then I have to get serious about my Christmas donations so I will have time to make my Halloween box projects.

Three Little Pigs Finger Puppets

The Easter box was mailed, but I still have a few projects from that to post as well as a few local Easter projects and birthday projects I am working on.

The Three Little Pigs project was one I started before Christmas when I made the Little Red Riding Hood Set. The pattern is available for purchase here. The Little Red Riding Hood pattern is available for purchase there as well.

I love combining finger puppets with a book for a gift. My only disappointment was that I couldn't find a really artistic version of the Three Little Pigs. I found a beautifully illustrated Little Red Riding Hood. However, while I could find multiple alternate verisons of the Three Little Pigs, there doesn't seem to be a really nicely illustrated one on the market. I settled for an new early reader edition and a second hand Golden Book copy I picked up at the library book sale.

The puppet's were fun and easy to make. I found the buildings to be more challenging. I never fault the designer, I find other's usually can figure these construction projects out. I ended up sewing the brick details to the house, because I couldn't get the crochet pattern to work for me and my time was limited with my mailing deadline. I have not seen any more fairy tale puppets on her Etsy site. I sent her a message to find out if she's considering designing more as I would love to have more to make.

Baked Potato

I had a request for crochet play food to put in Easter baskets this year so I pulled out a pattern I purchased with birthday money this year, Grilled Steak Dinner, which has an adorable baked potato pattern. I'm not sure if I'll get to the whole meal, but I will be back to work on this pattern for my Christmas donation. It was quick and something different from much of the play food I have seen.

I have another 18" doll outfit almost complete. I just need to finish the extra items. This one will be going to my niece for her Julie doll. She said she had outgrown the AG doll's and then her grandmother got her Julie for Christmas and they've been fast friends ever since. I have spliced together a couple of different patterns to make her an outfit. I need to finish the boots and the purse. I am also working my way slowly through a thread dress for my donation project. That has been really amazing. I never thought I'd work with thread and I am about half way through a dress.

I have another Easter project finished that I'll be posting next week and one more that I am almost finished with that is rather unique. I was gifted the pattern during Crochetville's holiday wishlist and it will be an adorable addition to my Easter baskets.

Safety Barrel

The Safety Barrel is the free pattern companion to the safety cone. This is another quick to make toy that you can add to a car set for a stocking stuffer or a donation for a child. I completed two of these while family and friends were watching the Patriots on Sunday. They went home with my Aunt for her grandsons. I am hoping to make some more before the deadline for a local toy donation.

As I mentioned with the safety cone another benefit is they are using up my I was able to use scraps of Lily's Sugar and Cream Yarn left over from the Halloween and Thanksgiving projects. Instead of small little balls left over, I have cute toys for kids to enjoy.

Safety Cones

I made more safety cones from a free pattern during the down time cooking at Thanksgiving. They work up very quickly and I am thinking about adding some to a toy drive at the local high school. They are very popular among my younger relatives with their toy cars. I sent these cones home with my Aunt for her grandsons.

I was able to use scraps of Lily's Sugar and Cream Yarn I had left over from making Halloween and Thanksgiving projects to make these. I like finding projects to use up the ends of the yarn I have left over from dishcloths and this was a perfect project. I do not often find a call for bright orange cotton yarn.

Farm Cilo Crochet

This was one of those projects that as soon as I saw it come up in my Blogger reader I knew I was going to make. Bizzy Crochet had blogged about this over the course of the summer and posted the free pattern in August. Her pattern includes not only the barn cilo, but also the farmer and animals. I already had made animals and a bag from an Annie's Attic pattern but the cilo bag was a great addition to my Christmas gift. I will be making another for the second Christmas farm set I made to give at Easter. I just ran out of Christmas crafting time. The second farm will have to wait for Easter to get a cilo.





I had the bag finished before Thanksgiving, it just needed to be put together. However, I stopped to finish my Thanksgiving toys and then had other Christmas projects to be finished. I finally forced myself to stop and do the final assemble job so this can be mailed with the other toys.

This is a great addition to Bizzy Crochet's Castle Bag that will be going to a different family member in the same box I need to mail out soon.

Brontosaurus the Dinosaur Project Continues

I was so pleased with the second brontosaurus. I liked the color and using a smaller hook and better sewing techniques this guy actually stands up better, too. I was thrilled when I saw him coming together at how much better he looked than the first one I made. Looking at the sewing improvements, I think I can actually fix the legs on the first one to improve his ability to stand up.

My skills have come a long way since I started working on these projects and this guy reminds me to stop always criticizing what I cannot do and be happy with what I have learned to do better.

My Thanksgiving projects are continuing. After finishing the Hello Kitty project, I think I discovered a way to rescue a Pilgrim Weeble like woman that I almost abandoned in frustration because I could not get the pattern to work. After learning a few tricks from pulling out Hello Kitty's outfit a few times, I think I can now make the Weeble like Pilgrim lady work and even perhaps create a Mr. Pilgrim to be her companion for the holidays. An old Annie's Attic pattern is providing me with the chance to create a pair of Pilgrim bears. When those are completed, I will post those pictures as well.

Hello Kitty Pilgrim

The Hello Kitty Witch was a big hit so it was only logical that I would need to try to make a Hello Kitty Pilgrim. The Witch had an advantage, a free pattern. I have yet to find a Hello Kitty Pilgrim pattern and for those hoping this will enlighten you I am sorry, this is likely a one of a kind attempt on my part. I will explain how it happened and someone else may actually be able to come up with a saner path to create it.




I used Armina Ami-Nal's Hello Kitty Witch Patternfor the basic Hello Kitty pattern. I have found her patterns to be easy to follow and like the results. That gave me the Kitty Pilgrim grey body and white head. I used the Barbie Pilgrim pattern from Shady Lane's Timeless Fashion Doll Wardrobe, Vol. 1, #495 to create a basis for the cape and apron. I chose grey for the cape and hood because white on white does not look great. The original Barbie pattern has a white apron and a white cape. Obviously, Barbie and Hello Kitty do not share the same body shape. However, I was able to use the same basic idea to create an apron and a cape that covered her head. The Witch pattern has a cape but no hood, so I needed a different model.

As I continued with my project, I realized my cape hood was more like a shawl used as a hood than a traditional bonnet covering, but with the width of Hello Kitty's head, it worked for my purposes. I was pleased with this project.

On another note as someone who is not does not enjoy the sewing and lacks the fine detail skills I was thrilled to discover Suncatchers makes Hello Kitty yellow safety noses. I have not yet ordered any, but these are on my list to get as I continue to work on the Hello Kitty projects.

Crochet Horse: The Last Farm Almost Complete

This was the last of the two farm animals remaining and I will say I am impressed with the ability I have shown in sticking to finishing projects. Even when I have wanted to go off and try new things, not repeat old patterns to make presents I need for upcoming birthdays and Christmas, I have managed to finish these gifts.

I love this pattern set which is an Old Annie’s Attic Pattern Club pattern, 87B54 printed in 1984. I have been blogging about my adventures with this pattern since April. When I finished the first one, I decided to do a second for another family member. I have learned a great deal since the first attempt.





One thing that I am hoping that will help is I purchased a tool that is supposed to help make tassels. My experience so making tail tassels for the animals has not been wonderful and I have ended up just sewing them. Perhaps if I can master the tassel maker I can have nicer tails for the creatures.

In order to make the project more interesting, I decided on a white horse instead of the brown this time. I wanted black, but only having black safety eyes, that did not seem like a viable option and I hate sewing eyes. I still have to find a source for colored eyes. I found one, but they do not sell small colored eyes, just the larger sized ones.

Castle Crochet

I have been talking about this project forever and I finally have the pictures ready to post. This is the pattern I had discussed earlier from Bizzy Crochet.



I am already thinking about the mistakes I made with the goal of improving the next one I make. I have the farm bag ready to assemble and I learned a great deal from that project that should make the next castle an even better project. The door is better formed on the farm and I will fix that on the next castle. I was proud of myself for figuring out how to put on the door. I assembled it incorrectly the first time and looking at it managed to determine how it was supposed to go on and fixed it.



Unlike the original pattern, I chose not to sew the top on all the way, so the child could actually get into the inside of the castle from the top. I sewed the top half way on and left the other side open. I wanted a picture with all the finger puppets on the castle, but in my rush to get the pictures done, I almost took down the castle.

Dragon Finger Puppets

Around Easter last year I wrote about the Crochetme Dragon finger puppets I was making as part of Easter basket fillers. I posted pictures and did not feel I had the skill to work on the human characters that went with the set.




When I started this fairytale project I found an additional dragon finger puppet pattern in the April 2010 web bonus patterns at Crochet World. As of the date of this blog entry that pattern is still available at Crochet World for subscribers if you are interested in finding it.


This picture does not do him all the justice I hoped, but he actually looks rather cute when in his natural shape.

As I mentioned when discussing the farm project, I am hoping to recreate in crochet some of my favorite childhood toys. I had the original Fisher Price Castle and loved the figures. The dragon and knight were two of my favorites from the set. Being able to find some fun crochet options has made preparing my Christmas packages fun.

Farmer Boy

I started out working on Bizzy Crochet's Farmer Doll as I mentioned in Tuesday's Chicken post. The Farmer pattern is a small doll pattern with legs. As I have discussed I am working on a crochet version of a Fisher Price Farm. My human characters have more features, but I still want them to be able to stand like the Fisher Price characters.




My original intention was to complete the doll pattern as written complete with legs. However, when I finished the torso, I realized I had a doll that was similar to the Farmer Female I had completed earlier. This one was much shorter, so he became a Farmer Boy, and the girl still needs a husband. I am planning to add more stitches to his pants to make the body longer and hopefully will have a Farmer Dad.

The hat pattern is different than the one found on Bizzy Crochet. I wanted the Boy and Dad to look different. I remembered the caps the old Fisher Price characters wore and was aiming for that look. I will use the pattern for the hat on Bizzy Crochet when I make the larger Dad.

Crochet Chicken

As I mentioned last Friday, I did rush to download Bizzy Crochet's Free Farm Pattern. The chicken is the first pattern I finished from the set. It is slightly larger than my current farm set, but I love the detail. I am going to try a smaller hook for the second one and see if I can make it a bit smaller to match the size of my other pieces. If not I just have a very large chicken on my farm. With their imaginations, I am sure the children in question will have a far better explanation than I to the chicken's size.

Later this week I will have a story about how the Farmer became a Farmer Boy and how I am changing the pattern to work with my Fisher Price theme.

Crochet Pig Finger Puppet

As I mentioned earlier in the week I am working my way through a book of finger puppets Finger Puppets 12 Designs To Crochet by Susan Pippin. I really like combining my love of making Ami's with puppets. This particular pattern book was a real find when I was buying vintage patterns. I am realizing as I master the basic techniques that I can move beyond the patterns in the book to create what I want.

For instance after finishing this pig I had a real desire to make a fairy tale set out of these puppets. The Three Little Pigs would be perfect, but there is no wolf. I will post soon about my wolf solution and hopefully an update on the Three Pigs project.

I am working on a flat puppet project and while interesting it is not nearly as fun as these little ami puppets have been during the creation phase.

Free Farm Pattern

I have been posting blogs for several months about my farm project based on an out of print Annie's Attic pattern. The picture above is of the Annie's Attic one since I cannot borrow the designer's photographs of her new design. However, I hate not having pictures.

I have been following Bizzy Crochet's blog about her farm project, but was waiting for the pattern to be posted before mentioning it to others who have been asking me where to find their own Fisher Price like farm. Well I must say this is BETTER than the Annie's Attic version. The pieces are stored in a farmhouse shaped like the silo many of us remember from the original Fisher Price Barn. I plan to have this downloaded by the time this is posted to avoid the rush.

The pattern includes some animals I have and some I do not. I finally have a male farmer to go with my farmer girl. I am also thrilled to take on the challenge of a barn. With all the additional animals, I keep adding the farm bag is not going to be nearly big enough to hold all the animals and it will be fun to have a crochet area for the kids to play with the farm animals. I am thrilled to have this pattern to try.

Crochet Soup

I have not seen an actual pattern for soup although I have seen bowls, cereal, and even dip. Soup seemed like a great addition to my kitchen and fake food Christmas project so I thought about adapting a pattern to create my own soup. I looked at the cereal patterns but the bowls were large. In fact, I am considering using the soup approach for a small cereal option. Storage is an issue. This pattern is actually the dip pattern from Yummi 'Gurumi: Over 60 Gourmet Crochet Treats to Make.

This was an easy pattern to follow and I just changed the white dip to light brown for soup broth and added colored yarn for veggies. The pattern has a double bowl, which was interesting to work with and created a more solid structure. Some of the cereal bowls I looked at were single bowls and I think I would add the double option to make them more solid.

Crochet Frog Finger Puppet

One of my younger relatives is a fan of frogs. I wrote in an earlier blog about making the Teddy Bear amigurumi finger puppet from Finger Puppets 12 Designs To Crochet by Susan Pippin. Once I found out about the frog, he had to get on my Christmas list.

Now all the patterns have arms and legs, but as I have been working my way through the book I have made some different choices. I did start on the legs for the frog, but I decided to leave him with the arms because the legs seemed to get in the way of the puppet, in this instance. I have another project I will be writing about later where I chose to add the legs. For me it is all about how it looks when I go to assemble the puppet.

Crochet Little People

As I mentioned in the post about the Fourth of July Car, I have been working to find a pattern that would make crochet toys close to the Fisher Price Little People or the Weebles. My first attempt was a start, but not where I wanted to finish.

While I was working on Christmas ornaments, I think I found the solution. It is amazing the things you discover when trying to do something else. I was working on ornaments from Leisure Arts Christmas Ornaments to Crochet #512. The leaflet has a "basic ornament" pattern that it refers to for several people and animal ornament patterns. I was working on one of the doll patterns when I realized it was not coming out as the pattern suggested, however it did look like the Little People I had been trying to make. Therefore, I abandoned ornament making and made a couple of these as prototypes. I will have to make more before Christmas, but I have a start now.

These are easy to adapt and I am looking forward to making a variety of them to go with my other toys. I see a farmer couple emerging.
