Happy Halloween. Time to celebrate by remembering all the Halloween projects.

Baby Doll Pumpkin Costume

With a new baby sister getting dressed up for Halloween, shouldn't big sister be able to dress her baby doll up for Halloween too? Well that was my thinking, but there aren't many costumes out there for baby dolls so some creativity was required. I'd been gifted an 18 inch doll pattern for a pumpkin costume. You can find it for purchase here. I decided to simplify the pattern just making the pumpkin section and hat using worsted weight yarn and the suggested hook. I tend to need to go with a larger hook than suggested to make clothes fit so I suspected if I went as suggested I might be close for the smaller 18" doll.

The pattern did require some adjustments to make it fit the 16" dol. I ended up going up a hook size for the hat as it was too small made with the suggested hook. The pumpkin as written would not have slipped on and off as written so I used a pumpkin button to close the opening on the second shoulder.

I've been making pants for years, so instead of going with the suggested pants directions I made "shorts" for the baby to finish off the clothing part of the costume. I decided to go with the friendly pumpkin rather than the jack lantern. It looked a little friendlier for a baby.

This was fun to make. I really enjoyed adapting the pattern to make it fit the doll and love the idea of the baby doll being ready for the holiday. I have a Christmas pattern that I've never had the time to make in previous years for the donation. I'm thinking it would be fun to send off with the Christmas box if I find time to finish it this year.

Halloween Crochet Gifts for Baby

One of the reasons I fell behind this year on my donations were the wonderful additions of babies to the family. Cousins on both sides had or are having girls this year and with that came lots of additional crocheting.

I have always loved celebrating the various holidays and engaging kids in finding fun in each one. Is it ever too young to start? This year I explored some themes I'd never really done much with including baby bibs. This was a Halloween package I sent out to family to celebrate their daughter's first Halloween.

This lovey blanket came from an old Crochet Today pattern I've used several times. It is a fun cute flip lovey pattern, simple to make and seems to be a kid pleaser.

I'd never really worked with children's bib's before. I'd made a few for the baby dolls, but this holiday project provided a challenge. Lion Brand provided some free bib patterns and I decided to use Knit Picks cotton yarn to make them. You can find the free Jack O'Lantern Pattern here. The Can D Corn bib can be found here.

I also wanted to branch out and try something new with texture so I bought Crochet Village's Picking a Pumpkin Pattern available here to add some texture to my pumpkins. I really like how these came out and hope to add some to my own pumpkin patch next year.

I'm slowly getting caught up in my retrospective of the year.

Halloween Box Done

I picked a bad day for it, hot and humid, but I put together the Halloween box yesterday. It took me three tries to find the right size box, but it is ready for mailing tomorrow.

I was surprised at how much stuff there was to put in the box. That is why the first two boxes were too small. The afghan took up more space than I had anticipated. Then the toys and books began to fill all the space. Before I knew it, the box was full.

The only doll that is missing an outfit is Stacie. I hope that next year I will get to one for her. I have promised that Skipper will have a Pilgrim outfit this year.

I also had some books and other holiday items I purchased in the post Halloween sales last year. I have present boxes in the attics to keep stuff I buy in advance. I use an Excel sheet to track the stuff and print it out to go attic hunting. It proved helpful yesterday, as there were a few books that were not where I predicted I would find them. Without the list, I am not sure I would have located everything.

Halloween Package Should be Done Next Week

I love the way the afghan is coming along. I am so excited to take pictures and show it off. I am completing the final dc rows and deciding how big it is going to be. Then I will just have to do the finishing rows. The goal is to get it to adult throw size. I am almost there now. For the final finishing touch, I have to make the candy corn appliqués and it will be finished and ready to send. The last toy will not take long to complete and the crochet side of this package will be ready to mail. Next, I have to approach the attic and dig out the stuff I put in the present box for Halloween and I can box this and send it out at the beginning of the month. I want the kids to have a chance to play with the toys and enjoy the books in the box before the holiday. So, with shipping this will give them a few extra weeks in September along with the month of October to enjoy them.

Then I have to split my time between a several projects. I still have those dinos I am hoping to donate. I have Christmas afghans I want to complete. There is one in chart form and I have never attempted a chart before so that could prove challenging. I promised to help a family member with an 18" doll clothes making project. Those are just the items at the top of the crochet challenge. The list is long, but it is good to have goals.

Next week I hope to start having pictures to add again.

Decided on Halloween Afghan

I saw a picture of a Halloween 9-point circular ripple blanket and wanted to make one. I had an 8 point pattern for a baby blanket from B Is for Baby published by Annie's Attic. I played with the math and was pleasantly surprised when I found I had nine points.

I am still working on the colors and trying to decide how large the blanket will be when finished. I have a free pattern to make the appliqués to add to the blanket. I will attempt those once the blanket is complete.

The last item that I plan to put in the Halloween package is one I started at the beach last week. Therefore, I should meet my goal of having this ready to mail by the beginning of September.

This is my latest addition to my Halloween projects. This was originally a free pattern available from Fiber Doodles. This is a lesson in always downloading and saving patterns you like even if you are not ready to make them. When I went to find the pattern today I realized the link on my Halloween page was dead. I do try to go rotate my checks through the links every few months so I am not sure, when this one was taken out, but if it comes back, I will add it as I thought this was a wonderful pattern.


This was an interesting pattern to work on. The feet are created separately and then joined together with crochet. This is different from the normal pattern of sewing the legs to the body. I thought it was interesting that the knee was designed to be bent and I liked the large shoes that provide balance for the body. The pattern creates a shirt and overalls for the scarecrow. It was more complicated than it appeared, but it created a cute amigurumi when it was done.

October has begun and I am scrambling to finish my projects and already have ones on my list for next year.

Bloggers and yarn companies have been adding Halloween patterns to their sites and I have been adding links as I find them to my Halloween page. Lion Brand has added a ton of new patterns and I even found some doll Halloween costumes for those who are interested in making them. Keep checking back as I keep adding to the pages as I find them. My favorite find from Lion Brand so far was the cute Halloween bibs and the Vampire Ami doll, Cody the Count who is on my to do for next year as soon as I can print the pattern and log it. I will not have the time to get to Cody this year. I love the American Girl doll costumes, but those are also a next year project. However, it is always good to have new stuff to make.

Female Vampire Amigurumi

I find it comforting to read on other blogs that people share my challenges. It does not solve my problem, but it means I am not alone. While I have not yet started doing craft shows or making items for sale online, I do have a need to make multiple projects for family members and I find it challenging to stick with the same pattern for multiple projects unless I mix things up. Before anyone panics, I am not contemplating selling work made from other people's patterns without permission. I am just contemplating the work involved with committing to making multiple items for sale purposes.

This female vampire is actually a modified version of the witch pattern from Gourmet Crochet's Monster Mash Amigurumi. I used Dracula's cape instead of the witch version because it was longer. I had already made two Draculas. I needed a third vampire character to balance out my Halloween packages. I just did not want to make another Dracula that day and decided to play with the witch pattern and create a female companion for Dracula. One package requires two of each doll. I already have three Frankensteins. The first blue one has already left for his new home. I have made one blue and one in a more traditional green for the package that requires two of each item. The female vampire now balances the vampire requirements.
