Snowman

I'd hoped to finish more of the Christmas themed ami's from the Christmas Ami's set. I finished the penguin and the snowman this year. There is always next year. You can purchase the set here.

This was the last project that made it into the Christmas box. I realized as I looked at the calendar I had to ship to have any hope of getting the package there before Christmas.

Snowman

This snowman also comes from a pattern my DH purchased for me from NeedleNoodles here. I used my phone for this photograph and did not get as good a shot as I would have liked. I love the way the hat sits to the side on his head. It gives him a different look.

He worked up very quickly and like my comment about the Claus family, my only issue was with the stitch count. It would have been much easier to work the pattern if a stitch count had been included.

Victorian Snowman Caroler

I completed a snowmen family set for a swap. I was waiting until my partner received her package to write about the project. I found the pattern in Annie Potter Presents The Snowbuddies from Snowville. There is no pattern number listed on the booklet.

When I originally purchased this booklet from a vintage vendor, I only thought there was one pattern for a family of snowmen, father, mother, daughter, son, and baby as pictured on the cover. In fact, this has three patterns, which I had seen separately in other locations. It includes the Victorian couple I made for this project, which I had not seen before, and the Snowman Nativity, which I had seen offered separately.

I decided the Victorian couple was unique and chose that as my project for the swap. Since the father was the largest, I started with him.

I love the way the faces are shaped to give the snowmen faces. Many patterns provide a round ball, but this pattern actually provided shaping for the forehead, cheeks, mouth, and chin, which was unique in my experience. The caroling books are not part of the pattern. The pattern calls for paper and gluing them to the hands. I actually enlarged a free Barbie pattern, which unfortunately appears to have a dead link.

Victorian Snow Lady

This is another pattern I can attribute the starting points to Annie's Crochet Newsletter Nov-Dec 1986, Tiny Snow People. This is the wife of the Victorian Snowman I promised I would post after Christmas. She and her husband found happy new homes Christmas Eve and will be making their trek to Florida on New Year’s Eve, weather permitting.

These snowmen are a combination of the original pattern, Barbie, and Hello Kitty all wrapped up with some inspiration from some yarn I picked up at a Church sale.

Snowman Lady Green Hat

I continue to keep my winter decorations out even after I put away my Christmas decorations after the first of the year. That is one of the reasons I have collected snowmen for years. There is something festive about keeping something up after the holidays have ended. I usually put the winter decorations away as I am getting the Easter stuff out. It keeps the winter blues away.

This lady was made for a family member. My original intent was to make another colonial lady. However, I ended up with more rows in her hat and she had a different look to her. Her nose also was longer and must represent a good carrot growing season. It just continues to demonstrate that I will never have a static ami line. Each one I make is always an original, no matter how many times I repeat the pattern.

Victorian Snowman

For those of you who have been following my blog you know I found and fell in love with a snowman pattern from Annie's Crochet Newsletter Nov-Dec 1986, Tiny Snow People. I adapted the pattern and have been making a variety of these snow people for Christmas presents. I wanted an old world look for this one. I labeled it Victorian because it reminded me of the capes and tall hats, but I could be off on the historical period. It might actually be an earlier time.

The hat is actually recycled from my failed attempt to finish Ken's Christmas Caroler outfit. I will never find the hat when I start on the project for next year, so I decided to use it for this project. I had some black shimmer yarn and decided to experiment with that for the cape. I have found the dishcloth yarn makes great noses. I experimented with regular orange worsted and found the dishcloth yarn stood a bit firmer.

This one had to be wrapped quickly because he was starting to look at home on the piano and I was afraid he might not make it into the intended package.

Colonial Snowman Lady Crochet

This is an adaptation of Annie's Crochet Newsletter Nov-Dec 1986 pattern, Tiny Snow People. I have been working with different sized hooks and playing with the hat and cloak to get a different look for the snow people. This one struck me as having more of a colonial look. The hat in particular just reminded me of the patriot women even more than the previous one I made.

I made another one as a gift thinking it would have the same look, but a few changes and she has a different historical look. That has been the fun with this pattern. I have a Ken hat I did not end up using for his caroler outfit, so I plan to make a snow couple for my husband's parents who will be here Christmas Eve. I am thinking a black hat and cloak for the man and something more festive for the female. However, these things have been evolving on their own so we will see what happens.

Female Snowman Crochet

Yesterday I wrote about the boy I made from the same Annie's Crochet Newsletter pattern. I started following the pattern for the hat for the girl and realized I liked the colonial look I got when I made more of a cap for the girl instead of a winter hat. Since the pattern called for giving the woman a cape instead of a scarf, I continued to play with the theme and I liked the way the pattern looked.




The Christmas box went out without Kelly or Ken's Christmas caroling outfits, so I have a Ken hat to play with and I am going to try to use it on one of the male snowman I still have to make. I am thinking about trying to individualize the snowman and add them to some of the Christmas packages I am giving out locally. I have one to finish to ship with a gift card. Since I am posting ahead, it should be mailed if all goes well by the time this post appears.

These two are happily providing some festive cheer in my husband's office. I may even be able to finish a few for the winter season for my own house. No guarantees they will be finished by Christmas, but I leave my snowmen out all winter long.
